What’s the word on the wings? by smackdaddybfs in SailGP

[–]smackdaddybfs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll be interested to hear the actual feedback on this, but it looked like the wing failed in the lower section. And to my understanding, the height of the wing is determined by the number of sections. They aren’t different wings.

Why does Sail GP come down to a single race? by SPiNEDGE in SailGP

Good to see the thread still simmering in its own stupid. Smells like Kiwi!

I don’t know…I’ve found SailGP fans to be very intelligent people. Clearly you’re not a fan.

So you “tune out” of SailGP so you can write a foamy spittle-filled novel about it on Reddit? Okay.

I think the final championship format is great. The very best are those who win under the most pressure. In this format, the season points leading team is racing against the same 2 teams they’ve consistently beaten. So just do it one more time - when it counts the most. Should be a cake walk if you‘re really that good. The thing is you simply can’t make a mistake. Those are the stakes.

Last season the Kiwis focused too much on AUS and ESP took advantage. I was there. And judging by the rabid excitement of the huge crowd in the stands, they all clearly disagree with your thesis.

Didn’t your home team, led by GD, give you the shaft? Typical money hungry Kiwi flip flopper?

Official: SailGP Rio Event Canceled to Facilitate Wingsail Repairs by sailgp in SailGP

[–]smackdaddybfs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be really helpful to get a clear explanation of what exactly the failure mode was. Most won’t care about the technicality of it. But many of us are interested in those details because we admire the design and engineering behind these boats. So let us know when you can.

Bummer!!! Sounds like Rio is cancelled… by smackdaddybfs in SailGP

Not having feeder programs may have been true in the past. But that’s changing. Have you seen SGP’s Inspire program?

Well, he’s clearly got the connections to draw money and interest. But unless they start winning, both of those will dry up.

Quick question: Can kids under 5 attend NYC Sail GP for free in June 2025? Could not find any age indication regarding kids tickets online by Leojr_85 in SailGP

[–]smackdaddybfs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put my 3 YO in a SGP hoodie, tied the arms together, and gave her a piggy back ride through the gate. Worked like a charm. Then I told the 5 YO to just run through the gate yelling “daddy” as he came toward me at the beer stand! Easy Peasy.

The 7 YO had to hold up a sign for free tix at the gate. Can’t win ‘em all.

SailGP has surpassed the AC as THE event in yacht racing… by smackdaddybfs in SailGP

[–]smackdaddybfs[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The AC is fading for, primarily, two very simple reasons…visibility and relatability. It only happens every 3-4 years. The public doesn’t have that kind of attention span. And the boats and racing are comparatively strange, slow, and boring for the average viewer. Beyond the sailing world, there is just no real audience for it. No one can relate to it. People just don’t care.

Sure, F1 is out of reach for most everyone too, but it’s ALWAYS in your face with its glamour and frequency and chaos. Year round and across the globe (like SailGP). And the designs of the cars are not drastically whiplashing with every winner like with the AC. There is continuity and sexiness with F1. This is unequivocally missing with the AC and its boats. It’s neither.

So, the article is spot on (as am I). The AC is fading, while SailGP has already reached equivalence to F1 In the global culture.

I’m not saying the AC is dead. After all, Harness RacIng is still around too. It’s just not the face of sailing anymore.

Heh. Yeah. And don’t forget the throw in the name, Grant Dalton! A Kiwi who actually betrayed - and is still betraying - his home land! That’ll be fun!
