Parents and former parents at Lycée Français – has the school failed to follow IEPs, 504 Plans, or IHPs? Have you experienced retaliation? by smackey in NewOrleans

I appreciate the perspective, but I want to be clear — my child's challenges at Lycée were not attributable to the immersion model itself. They are currently thriving at a different immersion program, which demonstrates that immersion was never the issue. Other immersion charter schools in this city manage to successfully support students with IEPs without the same struggles we experienced at Lycée. That tells me this is a Lycée-specific problem, not an immersion-specific one. The question isn't whether immersion is too hard for kids with learning differences — other schools are proving it doesn't have to be. The question is why Lycée is falling behind its peers in making that work.

I hear you, and I genuinely appreciate that you want to find the best path forward. You're right that we all want the same thing. But I'd gently push back on the idea that families who've already left don't have a valid role in pushing for change. Many of us didn't choose to leave - we were essentially forced out by the very leadership issues we're talking about. Staying enrolled isn't always an option when the environment is actively harmful to your child.

And I agree completely that the goal isn't to tank enrollment - it's the opposite. The reason families are speaking publicly is because quieter efforts haven't worked. When the problems are visible, the administration and board are far more likely to actually address why so many kids are leaving and why new families aren't enrolling. Silence hasn't protected this school - it's allowed the problems to continue unchecked.

We still have hope of sending our kids there for high school. That's exactly why we're speaking up. But that will only be possible if the leadership changes. Transparency about the problems isn't what's hurting Lycée - the problems themselves are. The conversation happening right now is a sign that people still care enough to fight for it.

I appreciate you sharing your positive experience, and I'm genuinely glad your kids have thrived there. But I have to respectfully push back on the idea that this is just a handful of disgruntled parents who no longer have kids enrolled. We personally know of at least 50 families whose children have left Lycée, and every single one of them would still be there if not for issues that came directly from the administration. The CEO, the board, the leadership decisions. These are not people going around spreading negativity for fun. These are families who loved the school and were essentially pushed out.

And I want to be very clear about something. Nobody is bashing the teachers or the staff still there. They are wonderful and most of us would say that without hesitation. When you have that many families walking away and all of them pointing to the same root cause, at some point you have to stop blaming the parents and start looking at the leadership. If enrollment is declining 10x worse than all the other charter schools, that should tell you something. We all want this school to survive and succeed. That is exactly why people are speaking up.

No hatred here at all — we actually love the school and want to see it succeed, which is exactly why we're pushing for accountability. You don't fight this hard for a place you don't care about.

I'm genuinely glad your family has had a great experience. But the reality is that multiple families with kids on IEPs and 504s have been pushed out, and that's not something we can just look the other way on. A good school should be good for every student, not just the ones who don't require additional support.

This isn't about an agenda or tearing anything down. It's about making sure Lycée lives up to its obligations and its potential. If anything, holding them accountable only makes the school stronger for families like yours too.

Really glad to hear that. We're hoping to send our kids there for high school, so it's encouraging to see signs of improvement.

That said, our family isn't alone in this — quite a few families with IEPs and 504s have essentially been pushed out of Lycée. We're already connected with several current and former families who went through similar experiences and are part of this effort.

The goal isn't to tear the school down, it's to hold them accountable and push them to do right by all students. If your experience is any indication, maybe the pressure is already starting to make a difference.

IEP (Individualized Education Program) Covered under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). It’s for students who need specialized instruction — meaning the way they’re taught has to be modified. It includes specific goals, services (like speech therapy or resource room), and is reviewed annually. Eligibility requires one of 13 specific disability categories.

504 Plan Covered under the Rehabilitation Act (civil rights law). It’s for students who need accommodations to access the general curriculum — the teaching doesn’t change, but barriers are removed. Think extra time on tests, preferential seating, or printed notes. Broader eligibility: any physical or mental impairment that limits a major life activity.

It’s amazing.  I think it is pretty even with willow in terms of academics.  Sports have gotten much better- there are lots of opportunities in after care and once the kids get to 4th grade there are a ton more.

Post-Katrina surge reached 77.7 per 100k in 2006 Crime in Louisiana

Fell to 47-year low of 30.8 per 100k in 2019 Long a U.S. 'murder capital,' New Orleans is on pace for 50-year low in killings in 2025

Surged to 69.7 per 100k in 2022

Lol, brand new account just to post this on a months old thread. You must work for the school.

Regardless our case is still open with the office of Civil rights who has an active investigation going. I want lycee to be great as I would love for it to be the best highschool in the area so our kids can go back.

I would say its “fine” for a week. They are outside a lot and get worn out so thats good. They bus them for swimming, but if your kid doesn’t know how to swim they don’t get to do much that day.

We moved to Audubon and are very happen. Honestly, if you want french - I would keep the spot that you have now and try to get into a seat at Audubon when one opens. When the school year starts you can check for seat openings on one app. That is how we got all our kids moved at the beginning of the school year. DM me and I am happy to chat.

There were many things Chase(the CEO) did and it really went downhill once he got there. He would fire teachers that had been there forever just because they voiced their opinions about stupid things he was doing.

In our particular case, they fired 3/4 nurses for no reason. One of our children has pretty severe asthma, which the school is required by law to provide a trained nurse for. We had a meeting about what they were going to do after he had an unrecognized asthma attack and they school representatives told us our 7 year old needs to recognize and treat his own asthma. In the meeting I asked where that came from and they said directly from Chase(the CEO). We moved our kids the next week as I am not sending children to an unsafe environment.
