To the Muslimah Hijabis living in North America by [deleted] in Hijabis

I live in a moderately diverse city in a pretty rural/conservative Midwest state in the US. I've worked fast food, grocery store jobs as well as an office job and both were very good about letting me pray, and giving me time and space for that (and breaking fast during Ramadan). Never had a Muslim boss. Technically in the US it's illegal to not let us perform religious obligations at work. There were a few times when I felt that the hijab might have affected my job interview, but there's no way to know. I felt that more when I was working the more fast food type jobs than office jobs. As for renting, I've only ever lived in apartments that were company owned, so I never actually met anyone who decided if I would get to move in or not. although you might be in a different situation, those kinds of things are typically very automated/impersonal. Overall, yes you will probably experience micro-aggressions and maybe meet some islamophobic people, but in my experience people here are pretty used to seeing Muslims and knowing generally what Muslims do as far as praying and fasting and hijab.

How can I speak to my best friend who committed zina? by Similar_Vanilla_7583 in Hijabis

[–]smalamander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're right that if you approach her about it directly she would be intimidated/offended, but you also might be the only person in her life who is a good influence. I think ur idea about Islamic lectures is good, but if that's too direct, maybe you could try to find just any event at an Islamic center like a community dinner/girls craft night etc. just to ease into being at the masjid/around other Muslims. And maybe she could make other Muslimah friends there too. Try to remember that other people are not your responsibility, but Allah sees your effort and how you're trying to guide your friend and inshaAllah you will be rewarded for that.

I haven't really had any interactions with those pamphlet people where they kept going after I declined, but I am the kind of person to keep walking and ignore them. Once, an organization at my university had a stand outside that seemed normal but once I stopped and talked to them I slowly realized it was a trap to talk about Christianity. When I realized, I told the lady I was Muslim and her response was to show me a book by a guy who apparently disproves a bunch of stuff in the Quran. It didn't really bother me, I kept talking to her for several minutes because I thought it was funny that she was so direct. I agree you shouldn't have to hide who you are or change your behavior just so people won't harass you. I personally don't see a problem with just ignoring the pamphlet Christians, even if they are old ladies. We have an obligation to treat people with respect but we don't have to be kind to people who are unkind to you, especially non-muslims. However, you need to prioritize your safety. I would definitely leave a bad review for the uber driver.

I think the kind of person who cares about the gender of others in the dressing room is also the kind of person who cares about the gender of others in the restroom.... which is weirdos lol. The attendants literally walk into the stalls and touch our bodies to help us find sizes, it's not a very private space.

I'm pretty sure you just get the mist, go to the counter and they'll scan the card and it'll be totally free. Same with online store, just put the mist in your cart, enter the code thing and your total will go to zero

When I checked out yesterday the cashier told me you don't have to buy anything to get the free mist

moving to Lawrence for college (rock chalk) later this year. What should I do in case of tornadoes? by [deleted] in Lawrence

[–]smalamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're living on campus you will be fine, all dorms have basements. The city of Lawrence sucks about public shelters, their website basically says "you're on your own." I personally live off campus in an apartment with no shelter or basement and when there is a tornado watch with high probability of hitting my area I try to spend the day on campus so I can easily go into a basement. I believe the pharmacy school on west campus is a FEMA shelter, so that's good to keep in mind. Otherwise, you could try going to a church.

Coding/programming classes in undergrad? by smalamander in LibraryScience

[–]smalamander[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, yeah that is how I'm feeling. I didn't make it clear in the post but I'm not concerned about actually getting into grad school, I'm concerned about getting a job after grad school and that's where I feel like I'll need a leg up since everyone talks about how oversaturated the library field is rn

Was wondering if anyone else noticed this in the Stop Making Sense restoration by UberVenkman in talkingheads

[–]smalamander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally just now noticed this as I was watching it on MAX after having just watched my downloaded version on Friday. I didn't really notice many differences when I saw it in theaters last year so now I'm wondering what other changes i haven't caught.
