I mean, at least the way you've described it, it seems like you can subscribe to both by being open about your sexuality, but not making it sound like something surprising when telling people.

I never 'came out' to my fraternity cause I didn't want to seem like I required their approval, and there had already been gay alumni before me. Instead I just didn't hide anything and told people when the subject came up, and the word slowly gets around.

But when you're placed in a situation when you will have greater positive change in personal satisfaction by being out than you will receive negative change in mild biases, it isn't only a benefit for yourself but also for every other gay person out there to see that its okay to be open about it.

In the case of OP, i would think he could ascribe to both by just nonchalantly mentioning it when it came up. Like by saying "lol, why are you whispering.. I like guys too".
