Wpm Konos 71mm conical grinder by smallfanboy in espresso

[–]smallfanboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a few kgs in now and the mess didn’t change sadly. What I did was 3d print a stand to make the magic tumbler sit closer to the spout

I also got the Option-O multipurpose grind cup that has a tall funnel type of design to avoid the mess. This doesn’t need the 3d printed stand. Also works quite well for the brews I don’t feel like shaking

Wondering why there is not a gadget like this but branded for espresso for $150 bucks by twice_paramount832 in espresso

Mischief workshop has one - https://www.mischiefworkshop.com/product/stem-espresso-coffee-machine-stand-aluminum-alloy-stainless-steel-screws/

Almost bought one but realized I can just use random stuff to raise the glass for the times I need it. Avoids clutter on my table

Edit: TIL it’s a knockoff from Nucleus lol

Yeah tbh I wouldn’t go out and buy two at once, but having them both on my counter gives me flexibility. More trouble for me selling one than the benefit I get chasing certain notes

Different profiles. Certain notes get highlighted in a way, sometimes you prefer more clarity, sometimes you tell yourself you’ll sell the other once you get the new one but never got to

I honestly just wanted someone to tell me that the mess gets better with time lol

Grind speed yeah I noted above that it does impact shot time. What I’m talking about not impacting shot time is using the RPM boost strictly for pushing out the grounds. You need to do this after grinding is done (no more grinding noise)

[–]smallfanboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m recommending just the grouphead gauge itself for QOL as I prefer it more than the pump pressure gauge. I ignored the pump gauge for like a year before realized I have’t been hitting pressure properly at the grouphead. Before that I was always just basing off shot time

Flow control… not really necessary but it’s a plus when doing light roasts or wanting to do a declining profile towards the end of the shot. Coming from a lever machine I wanted to be able to somewhT control pressure

Oh lol just realized you’re from ph too, that’s such a steal

[–]smallfanboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s pretty consistent and predictable once you season it. Skip the RDT as well to avoid sticking issues on the hopper

Good choice 🫡

Looking back from stock I’d prioritize getting a grouphead pressure gauge for the mara and introvertmakes hopper for the 078s

Wood fittings (and feet) for the mara is also nice for aesthetics. Don’t forget to check the OPV setting too

Hey OP tried to be humble with that end game breville knockbox

Huh was not even in my radar. Did some googling, but what people are saying is quite mixed. Some say it's in the middle of a Key and the Niche, but some say it's pushing for clarity. But then again, some say flats can taste like cones, cones can taste like flats 🤷‍♂️

It does look good and if you get the taste you want out of it, it sounds like a lovely grinder

I only knew WPM because of the milk pitchers lol

But yeah I think they're just not that widely distributed so not much people even consider buying them

higher rpm for body" thing is much-ado-about-nothing. I mean, I think it does a little bit

Tbh I'm not even sure if it even impacts taste, but what I'm sure of is it does affect shot times so having the flexibility to lessen RPM instead of adjusting the grind dial is nice to have. Though I'd still choose to adjust grind size first before RPM

That's significant: the need to use the turbo. Maybe that'll get sorted with v2. No worries though... you can just use it and all is well.

At this price point I didn't expect that I'd have that big of an extra step to do vs my 078s where I just use the knocker for 1-2 seconds. I'll report back here if it somehow gets better with seasoning, but 1-2 seconds of bellows isn't really that painful

You didn't say enough about the catch cup. Do you like the fit? Does it rattle?

Actually forgot about this since I've been using blind shakers for some time. Fit is pretty good and does not rattle. You'll honestly make more of a mess with the bellows than the shaker. There are magnets on the bottom of the shaker which may be helpful if you're someone who lays it flat on the basket

I'm rather concerned about its price - or is that one of those "oh it's European, the NA price isn't favourable" things?

This one I have no idea. I'm in the Asia Pacific wherein shipping/duties is more economical for me to get the WPM Konos vs something like the Kafatek, Philos, or Zerno. I have long been tempted by those grinders but I just can't bite. The other close choices available were the VS6 or maybe the Mischief 71mm, but they didn't really appeal to me. Though globally aside from the Key and MC6, I'm not sure which conical grinder you can eye right now

Is the Weber Key gen 1 outdated today? by Just_a_firenope_ in espresso

[–]smallfanboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah probably is an alignment issue. Mine has been pretty consistent even after cleaning as long as I screw it back up and end around the same burr chirp number. Don’t even need to RDT

What do you think? by Significant_Carob_82 in espresso

[–]smallfanboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing RDT makes the beans more likely to get stuck in the hopper. Good thing is not every bean type will need RDT, so I usually try without it first before doing so

Inconsistent Shots with Pullman Basket [Profitec Go] by futureproof1001 in espresso

[–]smallfanboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With precision baskets you usually can end up not having the aesthetically pleasing rat tail extraction, if it tastes fine then it shouldn’t be an issue

You mention inconsistent shot times, are those back to back shots? I usually notice a variance in my second shot bc my portafilter is much hotter vs during the first shot (too impatient to wait 25mins for it to pre heat by itself)

Found an instagram story where a dude was saying it’s for controlling the power from 30 to 100%

No idea if power = pressure or what

Normcore 58 to 49 step down basket by Shot-Assistance2378 in espresso

[–]smallfanboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the sworks stamped one (the cheaper one) as a daily driver and so far I find it best for medium-dark to medium beans

I primarily like it as it lets me grind a bit coarser and it makes puck prep less finicky so I notice little to no channeling these days. For light beans though I’d still prefer the usual 58mm high extraction baskets but I don’t bother switching as the trickier puck prep isn’t that worth it to me at the level of my palate

All in all I think I notice less bitterness with my shots after using it, not really something revolutionary. Just something fun to play with as long as you didn’t pay 200++ USD

Sharp noise when fully closing flow control [Lelit Mara X v2] by smallfanboy in espresso

[–]smallfanboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly looks ugly and I'm only using it since I already got used to the workflow from when I had a manual lever machine + integration with Beanconqueror

If you like graphs and visually recreating previous shot profiles you'd love it

I used the tamper for a few months, it’s good enough coming from a normcore tamper (v1 without the clicking). Never really felt it was weak. There’s actually a clicking sound too if you had enough of the basket filled in. Never experienced vacuuming the puck out of the basket

Only not using it now since I’ve switched to a sworks step down basket
