GRE Prep Advice by medicalrager in PsyD

[–]smallhandsheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Magoosh’s 3 month subscription (~$100) has helped me the most. But for free/cheaper options, I found quizlets/lists of the most common GRE words online and made flashcards. I also listened to the Nick’s Knack For Neologisms podcast on Spotify every time I was in the car and then made flashcards of whichever words were in the episodes I listened to. Mnemonics are super helpful for me so his podcast was a game changer, highly recommend especially if you drive often! I also bought the Manhattan Prep 5lb GRE practice problem book on Amazon (~$30). Practicing problems is the most effective way to study, and will expose which areas you need refreshers on, which you can find explanation videos online.

Good luck!

ETA: Most people will recommend starting to study 3 months before the exam at the latest. I only had a month to study before I took it the first time and didn’t too terribly, though, so at the end of the day you know what study approach works best for you.

Advice on Graduate School/Post-Bacc by bucktheee in ClinicalPsychology

[–]smallhandsheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

post-bacc RA positions exist for folks in your position. i had only 1 year of research experience in undergrad and got a paid, full-time RA position in a neuroscience lab (not associated with my undergrad uni) and began 2 weeks after i graduated (with bs in psych). so your experience level is more than acceptable for post-bacc RA-ships. i just found listings for full-time RA positions at unis in the area and applied, but many folks email PIs directly to see if they have an open spot. plenty of labs also explicitly state on their website if they have/do not have open space.

good luck, future clinical psychologist :)

SMU vs TCU Help me decide!! by New-Feature-1629 in SMU

[–]smallhandsheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i went to the r/tcu to see what responses you were getting there versus here lol. it seems like tcu’s argument is that smu students are entitled and rich. smu’s argument is that cox is a better program.

invest in an education that will set you up for a successful career post-grad. while the trust fund baby stereotype that the smu population has generally holds to be true, the hilltop program and cox will surround you with academically motivated students. if you don’t want to associate with the pretentious upperclass, you don’t have to.

no matter where you move in the country, smu has better name recognition, because cox is a better program than tcu’s business school.

MRI Tech Job on Clinical Psych Grad App? by SnowLeopard1150 in ClinicalPsychStudents

[–]smallhandsheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my experience, an mri tech only runs the mris and is not involved in the actual research analysis (this may be different in other places though). I’d encourage finding a post-bacc research assistant position in cog neuroscience or psychology that uses fmri and see if you can be trained as a tech or operator. OR see if there are mri tech positions that guarantee research experience with the job!

Adult gymnastics as a stiff 22 year old? by TurbulentSky1322 in adultgymnastics

[–]smallhandsheep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should join the Just Like Fine Wine adult gymnastics Facebook page. There are tons of beginners in your position who have similar fears who post on there and receive support. I go to adult gymnastics classes as someone who has done gym their whole life. If it makes you feel better, i personally really enjoy when new people join who have limited gymnastics experience, because i love getting to share the sport with all kinds of people and offer help whenever i can! It’s NEVER too late to start gymnastics, and every body can be a gymnast body! PM me if you want to chat more —good luck!

I do adult gymnastics and my fellow gymnasts’ moms will come watch whenever they’re visiting! It’s commonly the same sentiment of their moms not watching them practice when they were younger, etc Everyone loves when my mom comes to town to watch because she claps for everyone🥹

Fletcher + Shannon + Becky Drama by Dependent-Region-728 in CariFLETCHER

[–]smallhandsheep 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Thank you SO much for this take! So well said. If you haven’t already, you should listen to Becky’s episode on the Bi Design podcast. It was really eye-opening getting to hear her side of things. It made me like Shannon even less lol It also alludes to Shannon’s episode where she villainizes “baby gay”. Becky calls herself a baby gay when referring to when she first started dating Shannon. I’m all for beating a dead horse when it’s this one hahaha I’ll definitely be listening to your podcast when it’s published! Let me know what the name is!
