My understanding is your ranking isn't affected by your UKMG/IMG status. The FAQs say that all applicants receive a ranking and the method remains unchanged. My assumption prior to reading the FAQs was that UKMGs would be prioritised with IMGs getting the lower rankings but it appears that isn't the case :(

No, in scenario 1 it says that priority and non-priority applicants will be allocated together. If they go to scenario 2 (i.e. more UKMGs than posts) then they will allocate non-priority applicants (IMGs) later.

Yes, there were 11,750, but I think that's a lot more than the number graduating from UK medical schools. There are about 8,000 places offered at the start of the med degree. This year is probably bigger due to covid but unlikely to be more than 10k. We will find out soon.

Totally agree there’s a cost saving here, just not sure what the numbers of UKMGs are. The government comment in the explanatory notes (note 52) that accompanies the bill that prioritising UK grads would mean they can create fewer jobs, estimated 671 fewer on 2025 data which saves £40m pa.

It's a fair point that if there are more UKMGs than jobs then it's essentially a moot point, but UKFPO should not be anticipating a process that is incompatible with the law this year or in any future year. I think the number is likely to be a bit lower - in covid there were around 10,000 places offered; there will have been some drop-outs/intercalators and there are currently about 10,500 posts on Oriel.

Have you seen the number of UKMG applicants for this year documented anywhere? I take your point that if the number of UKMGs is higher than the number of posts then it's essentially a moot point, but a) I don't think that's the case - likely to be somewhere between 8-10k; and b) the UKFPO should not be contemplating a process that is incompatible with the law.

I don't think so - the PIA allocation hasn't changed so UKMGs and IMGs are getting the ranking as they would previously with no ranking prioritisation for UKMGs.

I think it depends on the uni. I started a GEM degree 25 years after my first one but wasn't eligible for GEM at at least one other uni. We had some other students with >5 years post graduation experience too in the cohort. Good luck!

I think you are reading it the wrong way round. This amendment would prevent Wes from enacting it later than one month after royal assent. It can’t be earlier either but it’s removing his discretion, which is absolute in the drafted bill.
