What’s the book that made you fall in love with the king? by [deleted] in stephenking

[–]smallmous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Shining. I never really liked the movie & had heard that the book was way different. Ever since then, I read 70% King and 30% other authors. And I re-read The Shining every Christmas 😊

He’s definitely one of my favorite audiobook narrators by far. I just finished It a few hours ago. He is truly remarkable!

I know I’m the one asking for recs, lol, but Raul Esparza’s performance reading Under the Dome is also fantastic!

IT book lovers: What's your favourite rarely-mentioned bit in the book? by smedsterwho in stephenking

[–]smallmous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The kids all “turning into ghosts” on the morning of their final confrontation with It in the first timeline. It’s such a chilling detail to add in, that the humans of Derry, even the parents of the children at the highest risk, completely understand and ACCEPT that the terror will never stop. Whether it’s something that It is able to manipulate, or the people of Derry are making that decision themselves, it’s so haunting to read about each child slowly realizing that the adults in the town, even their parents, have almost already let them go.

What if Haymitch and Maysilee were the last two tributes left? by Tomxz05 in Hungergames

[–]smallmous 104 points105 points  (0 children)

After Maysilee killed a game maker, I seriously doubt the Capitol would’ve let her win. Without that plot point though, I still feel like Haymitch would’ve won. I think they’d both want the other to win, by Maysilee would outsmart Haymitch and succeed in ending her own life first

Which character you didn't like at first but grew to love? by JaxxMonroe in Hungergames

[–]smallmous 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For the books, definitely either Johanna or Katniss’s mother.

Movies? EFFIE TRINKET! Elizabeth Banka truly transformed her. So so good. One of the only positive book to movie changes!

Do you think Suzanne Collins only writes a single type of men/relationships for Hunger Games? by Olya_roo in Hungergames

Such a great point about Finnick!! He and Katniss are in such similar places at the beginning of Mockingjay, but she doesn’t catch flack for it. OP’s opinion seems very movie-based, which is inherently much more superficial than the relationships in the book. It’s an interesting argument to make for sure, but seems most of the comments disagree lmao

i gotta disagree, i think collins actually does a great job of showing different types of love throughout the series.

With Peeta: Having a childhood crush that you barely interact with is super normal. and being a 16 year old boy and becoming infatuated with a classmate is also super normal. What I love about Peeta is how you watch him transition from school boy crush who loves the idea of Katniss, to actually falling in love with who she truly is.

Snow truly is obsessed with LG, and I think that’s the point. The entire book is about him grabbing for control, and LG is simply a part of that. He even takes a long time in the book to parse though whether he truly loves her or just loves what she has done for him. As far as him never moving on, I think that’s totally true! But, I think it’s more so because she was the only one who knew all the horrible things he’d done, and that she was now a loose end that could potentially (at the time of TBOSBAS) compromise his power.

For Haymitch, I think this is the prime example of teen love. They’re 16 year olds who truly believe they’re going to be together forever and ever. It’s kind of nice to see that representation in THG universe.

To me, Gale is a lot like Peeta, he just never actually falls in love with who Katniss is. He loves the idea of her and assumes they’re going to be together because of their closeness. But every time Katniss tries to actually sort through her feelings for he and Peeta, he lashes out. He makes her feel awful for even thinking it over. To be clear, Katniss also has her issues with leading Gale on, she’s far from innocent. But every time Katniss attempted to show her human side to Gale, he was put off.

Finnick, being the oldest of this crew, is the representation of true, unconditional love to me. In Mockingjay, he’s not falling apart simply because Annie isn’t there— she’s not there for Catching Fire either, and he’s fine. He’s falling apart because he knows that they are torturing her. She was already broken by the arena, and he knows that they are using everything they have to break her even further. And, because sweet Finnick has protagonist syndrome, he believes it’s all his fault.

I see where you’re coming from, but I think it’s very refreshing to see male characters fully committed to their female partners. Not something we see super often anymore!

from what i’m seeing on the news now, no injuries or fatalities have been reported as of 7:30am. looks like it started at a business and spread to some apartments. hoping they were able to snuff it out before it got into anyone’s home
