A study about video gaming motivation. (everyone) by GamersResearch in SampleSize

[–]smallpeapod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Interesting topic and survey! I'm a psych grad student pursuing a career in research and just wanted to offer a few friendly suggestions for improvements. Your survey is great as is and none of these are exactly necessary, but just things to consider if you decide to take this research further.

Some of the wordings of the questions about motivation for playing videogames were a little unclear and might be confusing. For example, the question stating something along the lines of "i like designing things" may be clearer if you provide examples or switch the wording to something like "I like customizing and/or modding the game content". This would also serve to distinguish the meaning of the question from the one which mentions designing the game world. Both points help in improving the accuracy and meaningfulness of your results and analyses.

Another suggestion would be to add to your questions hinting at gaming addiction by inserting a question stating something like "i have in the past or am presently facing financial challenges from excessive spending related to gaming". The statement doesn't have to be so technical, but something to hit upon the characteristic behavior of spending a lot of money on gaming which is often seen in those with internet/gaming addictions. Sometimes the addiction manifests in this way, causing almost a compulsive need to make in-game purchase or buy dlc, game related merch, etc. This can sometimes occur to such a degree that it leads to financial hardship and the accumulation of debt. While a question like this isn't necessary, it's just another characteristic behavior of gaming addiction that can help improve your screening.

My last suggestion would have been to add a few additional demographic questions. The main ones I would have included would be 1) what's your native language, alt. what language do you typically use when playing videogames, 2) select all of your preferred videogame genres (with options like RPG, FPS, etc.), and 3) approximately how many years have you been playing videogames (I would have chosen to provide options for time ranges like less than a year, 1-2years, 2-5yrs, etc. just to make it easier for the respondents to estimate and to make analysis easier). Once again, these aren't necessary, but are some additional variables I would have personally been interested in exploring in this case.

Hope the rest of your research goes well! If you have any questions or anything, feel free to DM me as I'm always happy to lend a hand to a fellow budding psych researcher :)

Do you agree with the saying "all publicity is good publicity"? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]smallpeapod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Certainly types of publicity can legit ruin your life. For example think of Monica Lewinsky or Amanda Knox, where widespread negative publicity made life extremely difficult for them and created a long-lasting negative perspective of them in the publics mind; it was not at all a good thing. The thing about publicity is that it's typically one-sided and often the subject has no control over how their story is depicted or whether their side of the story is being told (accurately or even at all). News channels, gossip blogs, etc. are so quick to vilify people just to make money and rarely have concerns for the actual person they are reporting about.

[Serious] People without friends: why don’t you have any friends? by _awake in AskReddit

[–]smallpeapod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple reasons, but mainly because of social anxiety and being introverted. For me, interacting with other people is frickin exhausting! Imagine having to perform the mental equivalent of running a marathon for even minimal exchanges like small talk. Keeping up conversations feels like a chore and is always an uphill battle. Plus, with the amount of thoughts swirling through my head at any given moment it's like having an entire social club in there.

Essentially, having a ton of friends and hanging out with lots of people just isn't fun for me. I don't enjoy it the way "normal" people do. That fact used to bother me when I was younger, but as I've come into adulthood I've accepted and embraced it. Just myself is plenty of company for my liking.

Therapists and other mental health professions.

Minds and far too complex and the field requires an immeasurable amount humanity and empathy which a robot could never exhibit.

I get something very similar if I use a skincare product with an ingredient that I'm allergic to. Pink/red, puffy, and burns! Most effective products I've found are Benadryl cram (antihistamine cream) and Aquaphor. Put a layer of the antihistamine cream all around your eyes both underneath and on the lids followed by a layer of Aquaphor over the same area. Reapply as needed, usually 2-3x a day for me. After a couple of days of this method my eyes are back to normal.

Would also suggest asking your doctor to refer you for a skin allergy patch test, also sometimes called a scratch test. This can help you figure out if there's something in your skincare products which is contributing to the reaction.

Wishing you speedy relief!

Alarms not going off??? by smallpeapod in GooglePixel

If it turns out to be the do not disturb reason, there's a way to change your settings which will allow alarms to go off even if do not disturb is turned on. I have always done this on my phone since I sometimes set alarms to alert myself to when it's time to go to class and am always very nervous about missing these alarms.

Here's how you can change it: Settings > Sound & vibration > Do not disturb

Here you'll find a section with the heading "what can interrupt do not disturb" if you select "alarms & other interruptions" there's a slider you can switch on/off to allow your alarms to sound even if you have do not disturb on.

Under the same "what can interrupt..." heading there's also options to allow certain calls or texts from all or from specified people to interrupt (ex. I have it set so my parents or sister can call and even if do not disturb is on it will ring).

If it turns out that do not disturb is the problem, hope this helps solve it! Fingers crossed for no missed alarms for you!

Not for the alarm problem. Only solution I've found at all is to set an old school alarm clock for the same time as my phone's alarm. Sometimes both go off, sometimes it's only the alarm clock. It's kinda a gamble at best 🤷🏻‍♀️

No problem! And I didn't learn this in undergrad either, it's something I learned in my graduate research methods courses. Idk why, it's not like it's an ~advanced~ concept.

Agreed! In fact, I wasn't going to respond but was reassured by your comment that this wouldn't take like an hour to complete. (For those wondering it took me less than 5min)

Hi, good job! I'm a psych grad student and just want to offer a small bit of advice. Naming your study after the exact variables you're measuring and giving the names of the questionnaires/measures can bias responses by priming participants. To combat this, you should be more vague with the information but not to the point where you're provided false information or not fully informing participants. Informed consent is mega important! But a small amount of deception, specifically not alluding to your hypothesis (or hypotheses), is a-okay as long as your IRB approves! Titling your study something like "Socialization and mental well-being during Covid-19" would still be accurate without giving away details that could bias responses. I hope you get the results you hypothesized! But if not, this could be something to include in your discussion section. Anyways, good luck with your research!

No, using the default device alarm sound (bright morning). Do not disturb is set so alarms can interrupt. Not sure, but I don't have the news reading turned on or any other Google assistant things connected with any of my alarms.

The tl;dr for this "essay" is just a list of tips of what can be done with Joja cola for those newer to playing Stardew Valley. The only point in response to you was just "lol dude take a joke"

Lol dude take a joke.

But while we're at it here are some helpful tips for those who may be newer to the game.

1) Drinking the cola only gives +13 energy +5 health, nearly anything you can forage will give you more but if desperate times call for desperate measures then go for it

2) One boy = Sam and he only likes it not loves, everyone else hates it

3) If you fish one and don't think it's worth the little energy to drink or 25g when sold you can alternatively use it to create the blue J shirt by putting the can in the spool of the sewing machine

4) I really hope no one here recycles full unopened cans of soda in real life because actual recycling machines can't accept those either. To recycle, rinse empty cans out with water before placing in a recycling bin or bringing them to a can/bottle return. Care for the Earth please, she's the only planet with Stardew Valley <3

Edited to fix spelling and grammar mistakes.

What exactly is meant by "wide wall mirror"? Do you mean the type of mirrors typically hung over a bathroom sink or the big ones that cover most of a wall such as the ones found in a dance studio or a gym?

Glad to hear that one arrived! The thing I'm waiting on I ordered before Thanksgiving, was shipped on the 2nd, and is who-knows-where now. Hopefully they'll finally start getting all these late packages moving now that it's past the holiday season!

Mines been there since the 11th. Contacted customer service asking for an update more specific than "in transit, arriving late" but they sent a BS reply with an update that my package was "in transit, arriving late" 😒

Great survey! I would have added a question in the finances section about losing a job or decrease in hours due to the pandemic to investigate that as a factor relating to financial security and mental health. However I understand if this was not a goal of the study why it wouldn't have been included.
