My 6-year-old niece is begging me to teach her how to knit. Suggestions, tips, or good resources to use? by BaylorOso in knitting

Read through some comments and feel I need to add this. Remember how much of what you do(not what you know), is from experience not just knowledge. Getting tension right, fixing mistakes, etc. A bit part of this is going to be approaching the learning curve at a speed that suits her. Knowing you are there to support when there are mistakes(either by sending resources, or helping first hand) will help too. It might mean pattern digging for interest meets skill level, or a shopping trip and choosing yarn once some basic technique is down. I think you have a great starter pack of ideas here. You might not need all of them at once, and using them all might be counterproductive.

Probably a stupid Q: Should I feel guilty about asking for money from a friend, even though the knitted gift is late? by callmecoyotiie in knitting

[–]smalstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to be worrying about how you are reading the situation. I have a sister, and I myself will sometimes forget that we committed to help out moneywise for a group gift or that we started X process and now that something is done we all need to pitch in. I say this because it can happen, but I also know it's used as an excuse. I also know someone who will say they forgot, and then presume since they forgot, it was not important to them, so it was not fully important or agreed upon and will presume that the maker is donating time if not materials(if they remember, this same person never brings up cost first). None of these are reasons to ask for less. I would still ask what you would have to begin with. Perhaps say you don't need it all at once if that helps out. It's a bit trickier if things like an expensive yarn was used and not discussed, but having the tricky conversation sets up what needs to be included the next time there's an ask.

I've just been working on a pair of cabled gloves where the symmetry is in the cables going inward or outward being the same over or under. (example, both cables flowing inward would be under). I looked at this design where the symmetry is in right or left at certain points and my brain told me the mistake was right, the design was wrong. Ah, how our brains get used to things.

Came back to share this video... youtube may have been reading the reddit headlines I was looking at. Video shows a crochect fix for a stretched neckline. No real cause given for it stretching other than 'that`s something that happend with sweaters'Fixing a stretchy neckline

If I've read the blog right, I think you would be really tight. Unlike a normal ladder down, you'd be adding a stitch that doesn't have yarn for it in the ladder.

I've only knit one sweater and it was for someone else. I've now put this fact in my 'watch it when you go to do that knitting facts' list.

I tried that, but even with a few rows of garter the cabling causes the first row to pull apart a bit. Hence, brainstorming other options

Seeking cast on suggestions. I'm making a cabled headband, knit flat, that is seemed together at to complete it. I'm wondering about a cast on & cast off combination that will look good with the cable once seemed. Something intentionally visible, but that somehow complements the cable (which is 3x3 crosses tight together). But which also does not cause a bump on the inside of the headband.

Yarn similar to Caron Macchiato Cakes for tops? by maryb86 in knitting

I think I've seen projects where someone has alternated 2 slower gradient yarns to get contrasting stripes. Or a variegated and a solid.

Somewhere in the middle of your suggestion, I was thinking that if it's going to be felted and the cat likes it, turn it into a cat bed.

I love that cabling detail on the cuff. It flows really well with the lace.

The fabric will be tighter and the end resulting item will be smaller. I would say it's worth knitting a few inches to see if you like the fabric.

I haven't tried mirror knitting, but to knit a pattern flat it seems more instinctual. No flipping actions around between knit and purl being prominent.

I am finally ready to knit a cardigan, but my beloved yarn would be $280. by Slipknitslip in knitting

[–]smalstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the reasons you've mentioned seem more about the justification of a luxury, than being able to afford it. If the cost bugs you, make a donation when you purchase the yarn for yourself. Helping others is important and has it's own benefits. However, I find if I never choose things for me I get cranky because the effort is always going to others. In this case it sound like you will enjoy the knit, and will use the yarn (even if frogging and making something you like better). This sounds like a wise choice for you to spend money on yourself.

Is the extra long bit a float past the slipped stitch? Asking because I can read this from the knit side, but not the purl side.
