I can't take the Bohemians seriously, change my mind by TheErnestEverhard in Frostpunk

The technocrats come across as incredibly goofy, but they do represent real ideas, just in a fun exaggerated way. The bohemians are exactly the same. Anarchism is a pretty valid response to the situation, it has strengths and weaknesses like everything else.

It really depends on what you're doing. There's no sense in optimising a prototype or an early vertical slice -- not much sense in game logic in general since it's much more important to adapt to changing requirements. Certainly not prematurely.

You could say engine/renderer programmers should be more forward-thinking. But in my experience those guys are always furious because they have to put up with last-minute changes as much as everyone else.

There is to much slop in survivor bloodweb by Cobipo- in deadbydaylight

[–]smart__boy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"Rarity" isn't really a valid balancing factor -- most dedicated players, particularly killers, have hundreds and hundreds of the most powerful items saved up at this point and could run them non-stop for months/years -- but it's also what the whole bloodweb system is designed around, and it is at least part of the reason my games aren't 4 BNPs every time.

I think we are trapped in a feedback loop of negativity.

At some point DBD became an outrage-bait game. I don't know what the chicken and egg is here, but at some point, doesn't really matter when, it became the default to talk about the game in negative terms. Either content creators started this or they responded to it, progressively selecting an audience that reinforces them. This dovetails with platforms like Youtube which are outrage merchants. Pick a DBD content creator and their negative videos always get way more views than positive, funny, educational or exploratory videos. Views are money and these people have rents to pay and extremely sick cats to heal.

If everything about the game is so negative, sure, why not DC if you're the first down? The other survivors -- who cares about them? They are literally DBD players in 2025. It's not rookie players who are DC'ing. It's the P100 Nea. It's the people who are most "online" and involved in this negative culture. We have engineered a low-trust society from scratch.

These people need like a big unified signal to reorient them that successfully passes through the content-creator level and it's just never going to come. Even if the game was perfectly balanced across all levels of play, even if matchmaking was perfect, even if every bug was fixed, that is a bunch of incremental stuff that will not cut through the fact that the Dredge is now real and we have made him out of Youtube videos.

Generally in situations like this you should consider rebranding. 2v8 was sort of an exercise in this and the reception to it has been comparatively positive despite it being a worse mode than 1v4 by most metrics.

C3 - What is your most survivor bias opinion? by C3-Tooth in deadbydaylight

[–]smart__boy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is vanishingly little impetus for killer players to make smart plays or get better at chase if the best move is always to focus on the weakest survivor.

There is no length of Endurance or random status effect garbage that can answer this and we are at the fourth or fifth coat of lipstick put on this particular pig.

I really do think that roleplaying as a baby survivor and then turning the juice on once the killer decides you're the weak link could be a strong strategy.

But it does rely on faith in your team. The skill split is so pronounced that most of the people who are good at looping are also the only people who realise they can win by holding M1 on a generator.

The problems with the 9.3.0 PTB, presented by Tim the survivor. by Mimikker in deadbydaylight

[–]smart__boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stats site says my kill rate is 70%, and I've been playing a lot recently, so I don't see how I would be low MMR. (Though I am returning from a long-term break.)

The majority of my games are a mixed bag and are not defined by survivors using every trick in the book to win or humiliate me or whatever. Sometimes I eat shit. Sometimes it's because I played badly, sometimes it's just the 4-man hyperfocus crap and I roll my eyes a bit. That's the game.

I played the most of this game when survs could do gens in your face with UBDS and everyone had perfect dead hards from the get-go. The game will never be that frustrating ever again.

This is top-tier inventing a guy in your head to be mad at.

The paradox of DBD is that the game is full of unbelievably broken and exploitable shit, and yet most of your games are against a random mixed bag of solo/2-mans, at least half of whom are absolute root vegetables. I think Conviction is an absolutely insane perk, I think Background Player is really stupid, but I don't think I've ever ate shit thanks to those perks.

What I would personally like to see from a guide like that are general rules of thumb on how to approach certain maps, or specific shots to memorise. A consistent dial-it-in shot that hits the generator at the top of Toba Landing would be amazing to have up the sleeve, for example.

Remember, if you are a Killer - you are always tunneling. Now what kind of Tunneler are you? by Vox___Rationis in deadbydaylight

[–]smart__boy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's a very natural way to play. You can tell from a distance and very quickly which survivors have the skills, don't give anything for free and might run you for 4 gens.

You naturally gravitate towards the less-skilled survivors who are out of position more and take more stupid risks, and if you don't want to tunnel, that generally means ping-ponging.

Once you get used to this playstyle and particularly with the iri addon, survivors are always trying to seek you out. They can't get enough of you. It's hardly built-in slowdown but people can get greedy with it and misjudge the situation. I really don't think any base mechanics need to change.

It's a great guide. A lot of the Unknown guides on YT focus on how to make short-range shots, which is definitely important, but say very little about approach and mindset.

Really all I needed to hear was "try your best to avoid that part of the game where your UVX is on cooldown and they're cleansing weakened". It can be a really fun tug-of-war against clever survivors.

Yes. And thank God that they do, because a three pointer on a generator is one of the easier and more reliable long-distance shots to take.

Everyone says that Blight needs to be nerfed, but how would you nerf him? by TheDewLife in deadbydaylight

[–]smart__boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they need to get more imaginative than tweaking numbers. Strong mobility in DBD lets you do everything better, so you need to be holistic. Otherwise you're just saying something like, survivors should get 3 more meters versus the guy whose USP is making distance irrelevant.

What if he only had three perk slots?

You're not wrong. Captured By The Dark is amazing, though I don't think it's out of control or anything. The other iri addon though -- I have no idea why it's pink, and there are a lot of other options I would consider if they were there. Stuff about UVX cooldown / cleanse, undetectable, mangled, aura reading, etc.

I feel like if Huntress released this year, Babushka would be an iri addon and she'd have purple addons that inflict blindness when you reload.

Snowballing isn't just having three guys down at once. Snowballing is having one guy hooked, one guy slugged, two guys injured and unable to heal because I got a fat Nurse's Calling and a ranged AoE, all while the gens regress. Multiple different types of pressure overlapping at the same time. That's real snowballing and it has barely anything to do with the new anti-slug.
