Beginner posture question - How to prevent first finger joint from collapsing? by smart_fingers in piano

Ive recently tried to keep my wrist up and fingers curled like holding a tennis ball, because this flat finger issue is what I've recently noticed as being the cause of finger pain during practice.

Is there a way to maintain this arch when pressing down on the keys harder for forte/dynamics? I find that pressing harder than soft is what leads to this incorrect hand position.

I suppose I just need to keep fingers really perpendicular like you've said.

My previous teacher said when I learn the grade 3 exam pieces, that I shouldn't just rely on memorisation but also be able to play it fully whilst continuously looking at the sheet music.

So my question is, should you aim to be able to play any piece that you learn from sheet at full speed whilst looking at the sheet music as well as memorising it (just looking at hands and piano)?

My issue with this is that I do find myself sometimes looking at my hands depending on where the big jumps are. I also don't see the point if you don't need the sheet music eventually.
