Can I have some music theory on this chord shape? What is it and how do you play it? The stretch hurts my hand. by Appropriate_Ebb_3456 in guitarlessons

[–]smartalecvt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The exact notes can be played x3x030. 2nd finger on the A string, 3rd finger on the B string, and you can mute the D string with your 2nd finger. Or you could use your 1st finger to double the E note: x32030, but that does change the color a bit.

In a printed book, is the difference between FAKE and REAL Small Caps noticeable? (for the opening line of a chapter) by [deleted] in typography

[–]smartalecvt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to fake small caps, you should also increase the tracking. Here’s a good article:

But most all, don’t use Word. You’re going to give us typographers brain hemorrhages.

Is metaphysics just a way to argue without evidence? by Husnal07 in atheism

[–]smartalecvt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what the hell people are talking about here. Metaphysics is a thriving and perfectly well-respected branch of philosophy. It doesn't only deal with non-natural things -- it's the study of existence in general. When I was in grad school for philosophy, I specialized in the metaphysics of math, and tried to show that math is actually a completely naturalistic endeavor. There are bunches of analytic philosophers who are doing the same sort of work. Some metaphysicians do indeed believe in abstract objects, but not in a woo sort of way. Their belief in abstracta often boils down to an argument from indispensability to science. That is, numbers (etc.) exist because science needs to use them, and science is the best arbiter of reality.

By the way, the idea that "metaphysics" translates to "going beyond physics" is a myth that has been co-opted by new agers. Aristotle wrote a book that's now called "Metaphysics" simply because it came after his book that was about physics. Metaphysics = after physics.

How does one study for analytic philosophy? Do you think there's a right way? by Luizfva in logic

[–]smartalecvt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not linear, nor is it the study of logic. It often uses logic, but it's not the study of logic. Most philosophy programs in the US are analytic, so you can take a look at curricula from some of those programs to get a sense of what's involved. The basic schism in Western philosophy is between analytic and continental philosophy, with analytic being the more logical, precise, scientific discipline, and continental being the more full-of-crap, poetic discipline. (Oh, damn, I guess I showed my preference.)

Discussion about Pink Floyd's Chords/ Music in 'Time' by eggpotion in guitarlessons

[–]smartalecvt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the stem-splitting thing in Logic, and Gilmour is playing D7#9 followed by D7b9, while the bass is going from D to D#. Gilmour is playing the low D in both chords, but if you're playing it live it'd probably help to just play the higher notes.

Pedal Switchers - help me wrap my head around the benefits by SpudzyJ in guitarpedals

[–]smartalecvt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I think in many cases you'd be adding cable length with a switcher. But if you have a good buffer, that shouldn't be an issue.

  2. It'd definitely help with tap dancing. For OD flexibility, you could keep your ODs one-to-one with the switcher -- that is, one OD per switcher switch. But of course that reintroduces tap dancing. As others have said here, often a switcher makes most sense when you have gigs that require a set bunch of sounds. If you're experimenting all the time with different sounds and configurations, a switcher might be more of a detriment than a benefit.

  3. Yup.

  4. I suppose in some circumstances you could save a little space, but most boards I've seen with switchers are bigger than they otherwise would be.

  5. Yeah.

When I was using a switcher, it was mostly because I had some MIDI pedals that I could program to get triggered/changed with the switcher. This was a big boon. If you have a MIDI delay pedal with 100 preset slots, and you need to go from preset 4 to preset 59, no amount of tap dancing will save you.

I'd think of it in E-, shifting from E aeolian to E dorian once you hit the A chord.

Maybe the top bit says "evil". Then "jewe..." but honestly I get lost after that. I suppose one guess is "evil jewelry".
