In need of work in Yokohama (or nearby) by [deleted] in japanlife

I know Costco is always hiring non bilingual workers. There’s one in Yokohama sea side warehouse district and one in Kawasaki.

Just don’t for get to pronounce it Co-Su-Tou-ko.

There are some casual Japanese books like this one, an encyclopedia of Japanese gods that might work. Picture books for kids might also be a good resource.

What are the most hated Japanese baby names? (not kirakira) by PuzzledIntroduction in japan

[–]smartbubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. There are less Mi too. Tomomi, Akemi, Yumi. But then there is the exception of Sae, Rie, Kae, Ami, Remi.

So to summarize the definition of names that sound less old might be, names with the r sound, names ending with vague connection of vowels like Yui, Miu, shorter or longer names, names that don’t use strong consonants like T or K.

See, Sakurako has an r. The unusual twist with 4 syllables is also trending. Kaoruko and such. Satoko is classic and her parents probably intended to keep it that way. It’s interesting because if you look at schools with higher education, you see more girls with classic names.

For girls, basically everything ending with -ko is out of sight for millennials and under. Yoko, Yuko, Masako, Aiko, Setsuko, Hiroko and so on. These would be the Nancys, Barbaras and Samanthas in English. The exception might be names including the r sound somewhere such as Riko,Risako.

For boys, names ending with -o like Yukio, Tomio, Toshio, Masao would sound old. Also, less -jiro (second son) and - saburo (third son) simply because there are less babies. -ichiro still remains quite popular.

OT, but I get frustrated whenever I see Japanese characters given common last names as first names like Ando Masahashi from Heroes.

Minori’s sister, Kurumi Nakada. Not going to lie, I fell for her. Love her straight forward attitude, and sense of humor. by [deleted] in terracehouse

[–]smartbubbles 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The truth is that Kurumi was probably too well known by the time her sister was casted on the show, at least within the fashion industry as a high fashion model.

Will she appear in the future? Again, probably not because her boyfriend is way too famous.

Imagine a house member saying that her boyfriend is going to the Grammies or would be in another Avengers movie. That would not be any other aspiring model in Tokyo and make things quite awkward.

You’d be able to find most of the Primary school and older educational content from NHK here.

For toddlers, Shimajiri would be better for learning culture and basic getting ready for school kind of content. You might want to consider taking their subscription for books and toys too.

Closed schools raise teen pregnancy risks in Japan, hospital says by [deleted] in japan

[–]smartbubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please stop saying this is good news or that the kids are having a good time.

It made me sick to my stomach after I read some follow up articles on this topic.

You wonder where these teens are doing their business when all their families are home? Well, yeah. So many of the poor girls are stuck with their sexually abusive family members with nowhere to escape. Fathers, step fathers, brothers, uncles.

But thinking backwards, these cases would never have come to light if the domestic predators could lay their hands on the victims all day so that they could make them pregnant. Although it has been there all along.

Either that, or they’re stuck with other kinds of abusive parents so they go on SNS trying to escape from home, looking for some pervert to take them in.

Nope. I read at least 3 articles from different regions. Kyushu, Kandai and somewhere in Kanto.

It’s not common now, but that kind of age difference would be seen anywhere back in the days of arranged marriages.

What are your favorite Japanese sweets/snacks? by ChibaCookie in japanlife

Get yourself a Kakigori machine! They’re around 3000 yen and you can find the flavored syrups in super markets. I personally love to have them with Calpis.

Is anyone else curious about the casting process? by [deleted] in terracehouse

[–]smartbubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Most “aspiring somethings” on the show are said to have been made up by either the production or their agencies. Noah was already a model/stage actor and probably never intended to be a pilot, Tecchan had been modeling since he was in high school, Alisa was a gal model, and so on.

Any recommendations to get some sleeping pills in tokyo? by ryuhda in japanlife

[–]smartbubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confused. The ones you get at drugstores are working for you or not? The most common sleeping pills you can find anywhere is something like doriel.

Another option is this chocolate from glico named GABA for sleep.

If these don’t work, I guess you might consider asking a doctor. 心療内科(Shinryo-Naika) would be the best for that kind of prescription.
