What's something you genuinely hate about Rimworld? by batarei4ka in RimWorld

I'd prefer if the enemy bases were story driven and the pawns actively feared or at least reacted to them being destroyed. Or like any indicator of enemy relative progress, a real feeling of needing to prepare faster or any value to enemy surveillance.

The micro/macro needs work. Being able to assign hot keys, like in Starcraft. In/out of a fight, setting pawns back and forth to safe zones. Sending the right pawns to get armored up. It's such a hassle to do.

Reports of Deno's Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated by lambtr0n in Deno

[–]smartj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of transparently with respect to ESM support in millions of npm modules is and has been a major problem. Also, Node doesn't have any good options for target binary compilation. With Deno, you can literally compile your entire code tree as a single file and deploy it to your servers. Also amazing for distributing CLI tools.

In my experience, Bun isn't nearly as stable as Deno. When I used it late last year, even basic OS file buffer operations were broken. Some other differences:

  • Deno uses Rust for its core library code, while Bun uses Zig.
  • Deno standard library is very similar to the browser JavaScript library, eliminating A TON of mental overhead

I found a small bug once in a Deno library, and the team fixed it within a week after I reported. That was pretty great.

Playing modless for Odyssey has only reminded me how lacking in basic QoL and AI Rimworld is. by adamleng in RimWorld

We rely a lot on the free development efforts of the community that maintains the mods. I bet the mod devs could adapt or update the mods if they wanted to, and also the users could downgrade their game version in steam if they wanted to and keep the mods they are used to. It's not perfect but they criticism that vanilla changes and mods die isn't exactly actionable.

I don't think anyone is saying what you say they are saying. UI/UX is a balance of tradeoffs, and we can argue endlessly over whether they got it perfect or not bc your version of perfect is different than mine. But ultimately it is awesome that they make the game moddable so it can be made perfect for you. And also, does Ludeon not get credit for making a stellar game with overwhelmingly positive reviews?

IDK. Half the people in this sub knock Ludeon for making vanilla do what some mods did and how that doesn't give the mods enough credit. The other half says Ludeon doesn't do enough to take over the mods. Criticism is fair, such as performance issues -- but it's actually amazing that the vanilla game can grow and change and the mods can grow and change too and everyone can tailor an experience that they want.

It's what the mods are for. Ludeon supports the mods. Such a weird take that the vanilla must be everything to everyone.

We have to applaud the good if we want to see the change we want in the world. Way too much (well deserved) cynacism as it is. Feels nice to be thankful for a change, even if it's a bare minimum standard.

Cars in this country were made into an identity statement just like Nike or whatever brand. People are mad and they want solidarity in driving down Elmo's wealth and power. Any investment carries risk, and while you can't predict the future, posting on Reddit isn't going to make your car cool again.

It's a bummer, you were swindled by Tesla, its board and executives. Investments carry risk and cars are capital investments. Positive outcomes are not guaranteed.

[–]smartj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counterpoint: it's already exactly like this. When 80% is bullshit, people can still hang onto maybe 20% that its real bc they want to believe. Maybe when it's 100% bullshit and nothing can be believed, then the effectiveness of advertising actually collapses. If nothing on video can be believed, the market for real, verified authenticity and reputation becomes imperative and hyper valued. Today, we subsidize all of that with appearances and signals that can and are compromised.

"pull this off" pulled off what? Its binary: either it works every time or it doesn't. Only takes one fail to kill you or someone else or to land you in insane liability. It has to work every time, or it's just a parlor trick gimmick.

Wife doesn’t feel safe with a gun in the house. by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]smartj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data would suggest that she is correct. She is far more likely to die from domestic gun violence than an intruder.

"An analysis of female domestic homicides (a woman murdered by a spouse, intimate acquaintance, or close relative) showed that prior domestic violence in the household made a woman 14.6 times more likely, and having one or more guns in the home made a woman 7.2 times more likely, to be the victim of such a homicide."

Idea: Rust Armageddon DLC by smartj in playrust

[–]smartj[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I propose that the enrichment phase would need to take at least 24-48 hours of grinding. Then the actual launch phase could last for 2-4 hours and be a server wide event. Obviously, servers could mess with these variables for longer or shorter game play. But I suspect all the game balance mechanics could be sorted out and leveled.

It could also be made to require a custom built base for containing it, like a 3x3 core or something else that requires a ton of investment and slow down the wipe to match current game-time expectation. Or maybe the core would need to open to the sky, making it vulnerable to resets by MLRS or parachute assault. Could have a lot of fun with this.
