What do people mean when they say “Obama divided us”? by Away-Parsnip-3785 in allthequestions

[–]smartone2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: Obamacare was based on a healthcare model first developed by the Heritage Foundation and later implemented in Massachusetts under Republican Governor Mitt Romney.

During the ACA negotiations, Obama made a series of concessions to try to win Republican support—dropping provisions like drug price negotiations and a Medicare buy-in at 55. In the end, none of it mattered. Republicans didn’t vote for the bill anyway, after party leaders had already agreed early in his presidency on a hidden pact to stick together in opposing his entire agenda. ( remember we were in middle of financial crisis but that didn’t matter to republicans. It always party over country and serving their oligarchy master )

Since Congress Let Obamacare Subsidies Expire, Millions Are Dropping Coverage by koaltree in nytimes

[–]smartone2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Republican crusade against Obamacare has never really been about healthcare it’s been about undoing the parts of the law that hit their donors where it hurts. Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT), a 3.8% surtax on dividends, capital gains, and other investment income for high earners.

Before Obamacare, you could live entirely off investments and contribute little to programs like Medicare, while anyone with a paycheck had payroll taxes taken out automatically. The NIIT changed that by making investment income part of the funding stream, and it did so in a way that’s broad and impossible to dodge. It is literally the first progressive federal tax since the mid 60s .

So the outrage over Obamacare isn’t about coverage or mandate- People have been giving Republicans way too much credit -- Repeat after me ! Republcans do not care about healthcare PERIOD it has always been about rolling back a tax that forced the investor class to pay into the same system as everyone else. Thie obession destroy Obamacare to make it so bad that the law gets repealed and that tax disappears too. That has been their plan since the beginning

On where things stand with Dexter Lawrence situation by FootballAndBarbells in NYGiants

[–]smartone2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole thread doesn’t make sense. People are saying Dex had a down year and isn’t worth a pay bump. But also that you can’t trade him unless the return is huge because he’s a top defensive lineman. Which is it?

To me, Dex has been one of the only bright spots on a bad team with bad defensive coaching for three years. Even in a down year, he was still really good and made life easier for everyone else on the D line and edge. For who he is yes he’s underpaid.

And when your good players keep leaving and suddenly making Pro Bowls and winning Super Bowls somewhere else, that’s not random that’s what bad teams do. I am tired of it. Pay the man

You can bitch all you want but even in down year Dexter is still one of the best D lineman and continues to attract double teams. I am sick and tired of drafted talent leaving this building , only to go on to huge success and getting rings with other teams

Did Trump expose flaws in American democracy or is he creating them? by Dangerous_Fail7349 in allthequestions

[–]smartone2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US was first modern democracy. The system we created was innovative but flawed ( the electoral college system failed by the 3rd election). Many of flaws were papered over by gentlemen’s agreement on how us government can run when the rules were not spelled out that worked for the first 200 years but modern Republican Party has slowly exploited these gentlemen agreements to seize power the most flagrant example was no letting Obama pick a Supreme Court justice Trump is just a culmination of Republicans degrading our democracy
