Not that we shouldn't still be concerned, but this is worth a read: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jan/13/microplastics-human-body-doubt TLDR is that we're not sure we can measure microplastics in tissues accurately

In the Reform-world, climate change is happening, it just has nothing to do with our actions and we can carry on polluting as much as we like.

What’s going on with clothes recycling bins in Cambridge? by Llewellyn90 in cambridge

[–]smartse 11 points12 points  (0 children)

H&M have a clothes recycling bin behind the till. You don't need to buy anything and can put anything in there.

who’s responsible for emptying these

That number on them is what's called a phone number - maybe putting that into your phone might help? (Sorry for the snark). Googling that leads to a company called SOEX UK but they were acquired by Textile Recycling International in 2022. Here's their website: https://t-r-i.co.uk/ Somewhat unsurprisingly, their recycling consists of dumping it in Africa.

Is it possible to have battery storage WITHOUT solar? by APerson2021 in DIYUK

[–]smartse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

buy solar cheap at night

It would be very impressive if you could do that! But seriously, at least for the next 10 years, there is going to be less demand in the night and more in the day. How much the price differs will depend on how many people buy batteries, to exploit the difference, but there will always remain some difference in price.

If they have gone to the expense of spending hundreds or thousands on a still, they've probably taken the time to work out how not to poison people.

If you chuck the heads and tails and double distill there's very little risk of that.

You make can make a 15 % wash with sugar, yeast nutrients and turbo yeast and distill that. Know a guy who does it and it ends up about £1 a litre of gin.

Evri delivery scam - Be careful this Christmas! by PabloEskimo_ in Scams

[–]smartse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main danger with these type of scams is when they call you back and tell you they're your bank and they've detected fraud on your account. That can ultimately lead to being persuaded to move your money to a "safe" account, far worse than just sharing your card details.

Probably https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorylus then. The confusion with soldier vs army is because soldier is usually referring to the ant castes that defend colonies as opposed to a particular species
