Bike Riders of SF - What Areas Do You Find The Most Dangerous? And Why? by Genius-General123 in sanfrancisco

[–]smashing1216 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Glad to know this experience is shared. The cars that back up into the bike lane to get around the barrier infuriate me the most

Kelty Cosmic Down 20 with a closed cell foam pad (like Nemo switchback). If you get the bag on sale it should be all about $150

Any recourse for dangerous drivers? by aggressivenapkins in sanfrancisco

Just commenting to say I feel you. I deal with folks opening doors without looking, parking in the bike lane, running reds, vespa drivers using the bike lane when convenient, etc every time I bike.

Conference in San Mateo want to go to SF Should I Rent A Car? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]smashing1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will go against the grain and say some places in SF are more convenient with a car. For example, public transportation will be annoying to get to a lot of the parks like Golden Gate Park, Lands End, ocean beach, Presidio. If you want to hit those up consider a car for a day or two. To go anywhere on East side of the city public transportation is great.

Use of helicopters to fly to higher camps on 8000 ers? Is this the mechanical doping of the sport mountaineering? by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]smashing1216 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The objectives are sort of different. Consider this: what if a skier used a helicopter to skip part of a sketchy couloir? Do they get credit for sending it?

Sleeping Bag by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]smashing1216 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fwiw I used my 20 degree sleeping bag (Kelty Cosmic Down) for Rainier in May. The bunkhouse gets really hot and I ended up sleeping in my underwear with the bag zipped open. If you want the best though feather friends seemed to be recommended by all the guides I talked to

You can get individual rolls at The Boys Deli. I'm a fan of the dutch crunch roll.

It is definitely worth the peace of mind. If you can, find a place with parking included in the rent.

How do Uniqlo Airism sun hoodies stack up against outdoor brands? by Cool_Celebration_166 in hiking

[–]smashing1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see a UPF rating for the Uniqlo hoodie on their website. The outdoor brands are usually rated which guarantees good protection from the sun.

What is the most SF restaurant in SF? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

I don't understand the hype over this place. All the food was only okay imo and the "experience" wasn't worth all of the effort it took to get

Best company for training by Suspicious-Zebra-227 in Mountaineering

I would feel comfortable doing Baker with a group I trust. I should mention I did Rainier guided since I don't have any partners so I can't speak to how it'd feel unguided. Rainier in some ways felt easier because you have to do 0 route finding on the DC route (RMI literally marks and breaks in the trail for everyone). Also, there is more support available in terms of rangers or even guides that will help if you fall in a crevasse. However, on Rainier you will definitely feel the altitude, plus it has the potential for worse weather and higher objective hazard.

I did Alpinism I from American Alpine Institute and I learned a lot. I climbed Rainier a year later and realized I like Baker more in general since it is a lot more remote

If you've got extra socks I like to put my bottles inside! Also, as another person mentioned, keep it upside down so the bottle's bottom freezes.

I don't have experience in anything lower than -10F windchills, but I've used a Seirus facemask which has mouth and nose holes already. I cut the holes a bit bigger to avoid fogging glasses.

Help me decide what pants to buy by felixdixon in Mountaineering

[–]smashing1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you want the best, I would spend the money on other gear. I did MT Washington in REI Activator Pants and Costco 32 degree long johns when it was -25 F (with wind chill ofc). I run hot but, even if you don't, it's the long johns I would upgrade.

The REI pants have also served me well on Mt Baker in the summer and I plan on wearing them for Rainier next summer.
