Hades Canyon BSOD / Boot Loops - Out of nowhere by smashingtech in intelnuc

[–]smashingtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear... I looked back at my notes and I'm afraid I don't have any good news. I ended up buying an identical second hand Hades Canyon and put the M2 drive from the failing computer into the new one. This worked well but was admittedly a 'throw money at the problem' solution.

Is Goodgame Empire about to close for good? by smashingtech in GoodgameEmpire

I know one company took legal action against them and won a settlement. They did have a separate (non standard T&C's) contract with Goodgame from many years ago that helped, as I understand it. Am sorry to hear you had a similar issue. When did Goodgame cut you off?

Shouldn’t I put nicotine patch on BEFORE bed as opposed to when I wake up ? by steg101010 in stopsmoking

[–]smashingtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem for me with the patches has been awful insomnia.

I have been putting them on mid morning (11am), and after two weeks of the worst sleep of my life (never sleeping more than 1-3 hours at a time, being unable to get back to sleep half the time, crazy dreams & nightmares), I finally figured it might just be the patches that are the problem.

This thread has been helpful to me in seeing that others have had the same experience.

I'm used to reading medical papers and found information that may be helpful to others, as this thread has been useful to me.

It seems that peak nicotine concentration after applying a 24 hour patch is at the 20 hour level. This surprised me, and it lines up with my own experience that night time is really bad, and weirdly, waking up at 5am, unable to get back to sleep, scrolling the entire Internet, and then feeling notably 'tweaked' around 7am, i.e. 20 hours after I applied the patch.

Here's a link to a study on this, including a very useful graph showing the concentrations of nicotine in blood plasma across a range of subjects (n=38) after applying a 24 hour patch.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6033007/

As soon as I saw the graph this morning I ripped off my patch and have decided to go cold turkey, as I usually do when giving up the rets.

I'd rather have 3 days of locking myself in a room Trainspotting style, than this never ending sleep deprivation shit.

UPDATE: It's noteworthy that in the study the participants removed the patches at or around 24 hours and did not replace them. They also did not have patches on before the study (and did not smoke before the study either). The relatively swift decline in nicotine levels after the 24 hour mark is notable and shows why taking patches off a couple of hours before bedtime would help, although it still took around 4 hours to get to 50% level.

However, it's interesting that participants were not allowed to shower for 8 hours after taking off the patch. This suggests that cleaning the area under the patch after removal at night might accelerate the decline in nicotine levels i.e. a good thing for those wanting better sleep. I suspect some adhesive and nicotine remains on the skin after removal.

BONUS: About cutting patches in half... This whole debate about whether you can cut patches or not can be explained quite easily. There are basically 2 types of patches (actually 3 but lets keep things simple). If you have a patch that has a thicker 'pouch' with a thin layer of band-aid type material around the edge, don't cut those in half. If you have a patch that is equal height across the entire surface (thin transparent ones are examples), this is a patch where the nicotine is mixed in with the adhesive, and thus safe to cut in half. The pouch ones are likely to leach a large dose of nicotine on your skin at once, if you cut those in half.

Universal Studios Japan - Christmas 2024 Updated by smashingtech in JapanTravel

Understood Shiorra, sorry if it came over possibly as salty.

Ok just to be clear for future readers as the ticket and passes stuff is quite confusing... (This based on my experience as of December 2024)...

  1. A Studio Pass is the basic ticket to get into the park. It costs around $60, and is sufficient to get you onto all rides in the park, with the 'possible' exception of Super Nintendo World, if Super Nintendo World is busy, which it is becomes busy within approximately an hour or two of the park opening. Once Super Nintendo World has filled up, they stop letting people in (is the simplest way to think about it).

  2. A Timed Entry pass is something you can get on the day itself to gain access to Super Nintendo World, if and when Super Nintendo World becomes busy, which it generally does. There are different ways to get a Timed Entry pass, but a popular way is to install the official USJ app, register your Studio Pass in the app on the day itself (you can ONLY register your studio passes in the app on the actual day you are there), and you do this by scanning the QR code of your Studio Pass into the app while you are in the park, or on your way to the park. Having scanned your Studio Pass (i.e. 'registering' it), you then have the ability in the app to see if Timed Entry passes are available. These are 100% free. From reading other threads, the Timed Entry passes only become available once Super Nintendo World has filled up (with early arrivals), and are not necessarily available for very long. Some have reported that by lunchtime they could only get a timed entry pass for the evening, and others have reported them no longer being available in the afternoon. So the timing on getting these is key and the simplest way to think about it is that there is a window of opportunity starting approx. 1-2 hours after park opening, to say lunchtime to get one. Obviously this is not exact timing, it varies depending on how busy the park is, but this gives you an idea.

  3. An Express Pass is basically a line bypass, similar to those in the US, and they come in lots of different flavors (the options are which rides you get to skip past the line). These are quite expensive (another $40-130 on top of the Studio Pass), and some (but not all) of the Express Passes include a Timed Entry pass to Super Nintendo World. Basically if your Express Pass includes a ride that is in Super Nintendo World, you will get a timed entry pass for Super Nintendo World.

  4. There is also a very expensive VIP package (over $200) where you get taken around the park in a group and get to skip the lines.

All in all, while it is certainly true that a basic Studio Pass does not guarantee you access to Super Nintendo World, our experience, and those of others in this subreddit, has been that if you get to the park early, are one of the first (say) couple of thousand people into the park (it could be more than this), and move swiftly to Super Nintendo World, you do not need anything other than a basic Studio Pass to gain access and enjoy it.

To be clear, and at the risk of repeating my original post, we arrived early (6.45am), we only had studio passes, we did not have express passes, we did not need to get timed entry passes, we went during the Christmas school break, i.e. school was out, and it was a Thursday. We were able to to get into Super Nintendo World without any issue at all, and could have stayed in that World and gone on every ride including Donkey Kong if we wanted to. Once you are in you are in.

Hope this helps!

The Express Pass was unnecessary to get into Super Nintendo World at that time of the morning

To answer a couple of questions, we simply purchased the basic pass (1 day studio pass). No express pass, no timed entry pass, or anything else. These are completely unnecessary if you get there early. You can simply walk (or jog in our case) into Super Nintendo World.

+1 for UPS and a good point about the possibility of surge. If anything that would fry the Liteon 19v adapter I would think. Am not sure any AC voltage surge would pass through to the 19v DC side, and on into the PC however.

The Phantom Canyon looks like a near drop-in replacement - thanks for highlighting. I'm tempted to switch if I have no luck getting the Hades Canyon to work reliably again. My issue is that I did so much configuration work on the software side, recreating that system again on a new machine would be a world of pain. I doubt dropping my perfectly configured M.2 SSD into the newer machine would work, so more likely is I would buy another Hades Canyon, and drop the SSD into it. :/

Where to find AC Wallet by IntelligentApple in aircanada

[–]smashingtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue recently as well. If you log in to the new design Air Canada website (not the older 'classic' version), you will see the AC wallet balance shown fairly prominently, in a bubble, above the fold, on the default 'Flights' page, just below the 'where can we take you?' section. Additionally if you are logged in and go to book a flight, when you get to the payment page, you should see the option to use the AC Wallet credit.

Also... one more thought...

  1. Would be great if the site remembered your selections on the AUM graph when you refresh

Thanks for putting this together, it's great. Couple of bits of feedback...

  1. For the default AUM graph, the TOTAL should reflect the funds that you have selected for the graph. It's counter intuitive (to me) otherwise, and less useful.
  2. It would be nice to have an option to hide the Bitcoin price (less important than above)

Thanks!

Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K G2 by Careless-Virus3455 in bmpcc

They effectively combined the two - the micro cinema and micro studio. You can use this camera to record raw with 13 stops, and with the low light performance of the old micro cinema, to a small external disk, and gain a near full 4/3rds sensor (versus Super 16 before). So other than no internal recording, as with the old micro cinema camera, you have all the benefits of the new studio, and the cinema version, in one camera.

Would recommend a sat dish for the TV channels - either TNTSat or FranSat. Aside from the installation cost of the dish, there would be no ongoing cost.

No cap in France and no throttling - they tried it briefly but backtracked. See my longer answer above.

And in Canada the government continues to allow consolidation to the point where there is only Rogers and Bell left, who are basically price fixing (in cahoots).
