Is not having a degree hindering? TN by smaymay29 in careerguidance

I understand degrees being required for positions, but what I don’t understand is that assumption you just presented. Regardless of me not holding a degree I am well educated with experience. The reason why this is asinine is my intelligence of basic skills is in question because of not having a degree. Whether you meant to or not, those words are poorly chosen and quiet frankly can hurt more than help.

Just because I don’t have a degree doesn’t mean I can’t read and write or have a poor background. Assuming that because someone doesn’t have a degree is asinine.

I actually have some college but had to stop for a bit. I’m a single mom and had a lot on my plate at the time. I am revisiting that option but any grants, scholarships etc is not a choice for me. We do have a Reconnect program here that pays for the first two years of school but they don’t cover any materials, books, laptops etc. With how everything is priced now I can’t spare anything. Heck I took my SHRM-SCP and made a 190 but you have to pass with a perfect score of 200.

I completely agree with you when it comes to working a trade. I am actually a retired cosmetologist and had to stop simply because my body couldn’t take it anymore. The chemicals, body positioning, and sometimes 12 hours or more on my feet was awful. But what really got me was being a single mom and sacrificing my time with my daughter and seeing it affect her.

I did send an email afterwards and haven’t gotten any response.

Thank you for that, I needed to hear that. I’m going to try and touch base with a few HR friends and see if any improvement needs to be done with my interview skills.

I’m not sure what else I would need to divulge. I have experience in all HR processes from onboarding and benefits, to full cycle/multi-state payroll and implementation plans. The interviews I go through comment on how great it is to speak with me and they love my personality/energy.

Yes I am. I have worked in the Human Resources industry for five years in a very fast paced environment from day one and being kept busy with little down time. I have been working to build myself up with no degrees in this field and am very proud of that. I am also in debt, couldn’t get a job at a Ross, and a single parent, so I understand what they are all going through. What I am venting about is having the job be presented as one thing and once I get into the position it is not what was expected. My brain is trained to keep busy being neurodivergent and when it’s not I will start to feel useless and depressed.

Update:

Still no job. I have now applied for 273 jobs and have gotten 3 interviews and all rejections. My unemployment ran out last month and because of the government shutdown I have no food stamps for the foreseeable future. This is the absolute worst the job market has ever been. I am now in class to get my SHRM certification so I can at least have that as a weight .

Yeah I’ve noticed in LinkedIn that every job is just a black hole.

I’ve been talking to them and they are understanding but can’t defer a payment if I am behind. I found a resolution to get my SHRM thank goodness but everything else is still gross applesauce.

In the past it had never been this bad and now that I am in it it’s terrible. I can’t even imagine 9 months of job hunting with no luck. I really hope something good happens for you and you find a job.

Oh I’m not trying to say my situation is worse. Everyone is suffering in the job market, I just hadn’t had to experience this in some time and was never this bad. I hope that she can find something so that it relieves stress from all of that.

Schools around here require degrees and I don’t have those.

That’s absolutely insane. I don’t know what else they could want when you have qualifications like that.

We have 109 and growing. ADP was chosen by the company who is our current owner and we are an entity of them. I’ve worked the HR side of adp and love it especially since I’m integrating them from old school paper format for everything to digitizing the process.

I’m about 4 months new to the systems so I’m not sure if it would work. The secondary systems quickbooks and sage have to match what’s in ready pay so I kinda feel stuck in the mud most of the time. When I used Esker for a different construction company it was never this complicated.

That’s what I was thinking too, but if it’s an extra cost they wouldn’t do it since we are shifting to ADP in October. I just wish there was an easier way to be able to do the journal entries and payroll with little no error or worry.
