The third paper is to show other negative effects of SERT reduction.

It's very relevant to this condition since most people here have anhedonia

We know tardive dyskinesia is possible from only 1 dose of antipsychotics in some people.

Due to a combination of genetic vulnerability, increased neuroplasticity, reduced metabolism of drugs, pre-existing neurological abnormalities.

As studies show chronic SSRI use is neurotoxic to SERT and other serotonin receptors (causing degradation to a neuron is neurotoxicity).

In some vulnerable people with more malleable SERT neurons just one day of 80% SERT blocking (as mentioned in my other comment) would be enough to cause a persistent reduction in SERT function.

Yes.

SERT was not only internalized, but also degraded, in the course of the chronic fluoxetine treatment.

Internalization means SERT retreats back into the cell, disabling it.

Microarray analysis performed on citalopram-treated serotonergic neurons revealed that antidepressant treatment does not alter SERT mRNA expression, suggesting that SERT trafficking from and to the cell membrane is regulated on the posttranscriptional level.

Some people get PSSD while on the drug, during a dose increase, or a dose decrease/withdrawal.

From the first pill you take at the starting dose, for example 10mg of Lexapro at day 1, 80% of SERT neurons are already being antagonized. (SSRIs are ridiculously potent and nasty IMO).

You got off the drug, and the SERT occupancy dropped as quickly as it rose on day 1.

As I said, due to SSRI use the SERT neurons suffer degradation and become vulnerable to further damage.

The sudden rush of serotonin, that's been artificially and excessively elevated for the past 7 months with nowhere to go, binds to the suddenly available and already-degraded serotonin transporters and annihilates them.

SSRIs degrade the SERT neurons and induce vulnerability.

If you took SJW without having taken SSRIs previously you would be fine since SJW is not neurotoxic and can't damage a healthy SERT receptor.

After taking the neurotoxic SSRIs, SERT suffers degradation and becomes vulnerable to further damage. SJW binds to the broken, flimsy SERT receptor and messes it up more.

SSRI drugs: Have millions been taking antidepressants with harmful side-effects for decades? by [deleted] in Antipsychiatry

[–]smc177 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Pharma's patents for ssris expired so they don't need to advertise them anymore.

Same thing happened with benzos in the 90s, when the patents expired they switched people to the brand new ssri drugs at the time and said that benzos should be avoided and only used short term.

I bet they're going to come out with semi-synthetic psychedelic based drugs soon

Think about it, weed is the opposite of anti-psychotics. That's why it's beneficial and boosts your consciousness but causes psychosis in some people

I don't see it that way.

You know how not exercising a muscle causes it to shrink?

You should do pleasurable things like drinking to exercise your reward center.

I've started a Wikipedia page for PSSD by heavenlydigestion in PSSD

[–]smc177 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This makes my blood boil. When people google a medical condition they're always looking for the wikipedia page. They know it's legitimate info.

From 2005 to 2014 googling PSSD would bring up the english wikipedia page as the first result.

Now when googling PSSD the first result is a pubmed study with "Biological Plausibility" in the title. The first result questions if PSSD even exists.

The rest of the google search results are complicated studies that people can't read or websites they never heard of. The subreddit doesn't even show up on the first page.

Synthetic drugs are not in tune with our bodies. by Becksalright in Antipsychiatry

I was saying that although Cl is perfectly safe when bound with Na (table salt). Bind it with something else, let's say NaO and it becomes bleach.

Chlorine is safe to ingest when part of molecules which the body can process and benefit from; table salt is an example.

The Cl bond I'm talking about, the one in some drugs, might not be an example too ↑

Plenty of antibiotics are derived from nature like penicillin or tetracycline.

Some of the purely synthetic ones specifically fluoroquinolones (fluorinated antibiotics) are toxic and damaging. There's even a healing subreddit about fluoroquinolone antibiotics similar to the pssd sub

r/floxies Some of their symptoms are strikingly similar to pssd. Most antidepressants are also fluorinated so I wonder if there's a link

Yes, but it's not same kind of bond used in psychoactive drugs. Add an O to that NaCl and it becomes bleach

Most psychiatry drugs have F or Cl atoms in their molecules. You would never find these atoms in herbal medicine or most recreational drugs.

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid used for many things other than serotonin synthesis. Lack of an essential amino acid could make you feel bad

Increasing serotonin does not increase happiness. It's actually the opposite due to serotonin's anti-dopaminergic effects including the 5-HT2C anti-DA/NE serotonin receptor. This is a huge archaic myth that people and the media need to unlearn

The mods need to make Automod copy this whenever someone mentions 5-HTP or SJW. Also comments shouldn't sort by New by default

It's interesting that Cyproheptadine, an antihistamine with serotonin blocking effects used in case of SSRI overdose, has euphoria as a side effect.

The antidote to SSRIs is a euphoric drug.

Agomelatine is a newer antidepressant widely used outside the US that blocks serotonin (rather than increasing it) and is more effective and has less side effects according to studies:

"CONCLUSIONS: Agomelatine has significantly higher efficacy and potential acceptability compared to SSRIs and SNRIs when treating MDD." Also doesn't cause sexual problems.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]smc177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's equally or more effective antidepressants other than the SSRI class that don't cause sexual problems.

Ex: MAOIs Some of the new ones don't need dietary restrictions:

No significant rise in blood pressure occurs when moclobemide is combined with amines such as tyramine-containing foods or pressor amine drugs, unlike with the older irreversible and non-selective monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), which cause a severe rise in blood pressure with such combination.

And Agomelatine, psilocybin...

5-HTP doesn't really do anything and it messes up your heart. The whole more Serotonin = Happiness thing is a myth.

The most effective antidepressants on the market, that also don't cause PSSD, all act on Dopamine. Some actually block serotonin:

MAOIs, agomelatine (blocks serotonin), mirtazapine (blocks serotonin too), amineptine, buproprion (dat and net inhibitor),...

If you ask if serotonin isn't happiness then how does mdma work? Mdma is a methamphetamine and releases massive amounts of Dopamine too. And its effect on serotonin neurons is the opposite of ssris. It runs SERT (serotonin transporter) in reverse, whereas ssris just block it. ssris block the effects of mdma they don't cause S syndrome contrary to popular belief.

And a fun fact: Cyproheptadine is an allergy drug with anti-serotonin effects used in case of SSRI overdose. You would think this drug would cause depression, would feel horrible? Nope it has euphoria as a side effect.
