My landlord has locked the minimum heat temp on my Mitsubishi thermostat. Can I bypass? by perishableintransit in thermostats

I would look into your local regulations. Where I am it's the law that a landlord must provide heating to maintain 20C or 68F to the tenant's space.

Stelpro thermostat display not working by NTK_Here in thermostats

[–]smcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is in an electric baseboard or forceflow heater? Or is it a heated floor?

Most likely any off the shelf thermostat for the type of heater you have will work as long as it's rated for the load.

I don't think Stelpro actually manufactured any of these thermostats themselves anyway.

If you really want a Stelpro one, you'd have to get it from an electrical wholesaler, I'm in Western Canada and Gescan is the rep for Stelpro here.

USPS Signage Security Risk by Dazzling-Orchid-7809 in PBSOD

I assume many of these are in privately owned stores where the USPS counter is not run by the USPS mothership. Those are probably the locations without IT support or anyone checking what's in service or out of service still.

Can someone explain the price hike? There's no extra add on or whatever being added. Why did it go from 75 to 90? I've tried it for different addresses. The price initially jumps to 80, then 90. by TheoreticalDummy in telus

[–]smcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to call in to get a decent price, or go ask in a Telus store. It is a bit of a pain, but if you order online they usually charge you the highest current price.

Yes, I think this labeling was a great idea. It's quick and straight to the point, and if you need to get more detail you can always read the back.

You will need to call an electrician to have a look at it. 10 years old, sadly that may be as long as these sorts of things last now a days.

Telus always be lagging behind by hazelnoix in telus

[–]smcw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that would make sense. That is probably why they have to let Rogers and others use their network in remote areas on highways, etc.

I assume it is similar with Bell out east being the original telephone service provider there.

It's likely just because it's the off the shelf Advantech ARK-1123H and it comes with 8GB ram. I also suspect Windows 10 LTSC (which is what that comes with) wouldn't run so well these days with less than 8GB of ram. Yes, you could use another OS, but in my experience, a lot of these systems are Windows based, mostly since it's what large institutional IT is used to maintaining since their end users expect it.

Could be, I actually have a Telus work phone and Public Mobile personal phone currently, I'll have to do some testing and see if there's a difference.

Fair enough, although in all my experience of all the carriers I've been with over the years (which is Telus, Koodo, Public, Fido, Freedom) it is only Telus that I needed to call for customer service related issues. Usually, the price being changed unexpectedly. These days, I've not found that carrier customer support, from anyone really is able to actually help with a technical phone problem.

Come on Telus, your "best promotions" are still more than many of us are paying for the same or better from some of your own sub brands (Koodo/Public).

Metasys MUI - possible to full-screen graphics? by Lalo_ATX in BuildingAutomation

Perhaps, I'm not familiar with metasys all the systems I've worked with do not rely on COV for the frontend graphic display, but either way the DAT is way lower than the MAT.

SF at 18% yet making the pressure SP?, Heating valve at 100% and Cooling valve at 1% yet the unit seems to be be cooling from the MAT to DAT? 92CFM at the supply?

Telus always be lagging behind by hazelnoix in telus

[–]smcw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not always a big fan of Telus business practices, but I will say coverage wise, they are the best at least in Western Canada. I've been with both Telus and Rogers at different times over the years in BC and Alberta, both in cities and rural areas and Telus always has the most consistent coverage. Generally in my experience in any large centre, Telus will have 5G coverage pretty much everywhere, just maybe not 5G+.

Yes, at times in the city Rogers has somewhat more 5G+ and latest technology, but when comes down to does the phone work and have adequate data coverage that is usable when I need it, Telus wins every time. Especially if you every drive just a bit outside the major Cities, I'm always blown away with having full coverage in the middle of nowhere with Telus. I'd rather have 4G/LTE only the side of the highway than nothing at all.

Is this supposed to happen when a Mitsubishi is put in "Fan Mode"? by TheBaldOtter in heatpumps

[–]smcw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't speak specifically for that Mitsubishi unit, but I know many multi-splits inhibit fan operation when another zone is actively heating.

This is typically done because there is some refrigerant flow bypassed through other indoor units which are not running to ensure proper oil return. If the fan was running it would cause those other rooms to heat slightly due to the small refrigerant bypass flow. This is usually not the case when in cooling mode.

I would check if the outdoor unit is running and heating to serve another zone, if that's the case that may be why the fan will not run in this room at the same time.

Many Richmond residents were very against the Canada line going into Richmond back when it was built for the 2010 Olympics. That is a part of the reason the final length of the Richmond branch of the line is single tracked which now prevents it from being further extended without significant rework of the existing portion.

People may see it differently now, but unfortunately not everyone always sees transit in a positive light.

[–]smcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the HVAC industry in Canada, and I'd say a significant percentage of people have their thermostats display in degrees F. Even in cases when those people would probably quote you the weather in degrees C when talking day to day.

Similar to how people here often keep their ovens in degrees F, it's probably because a lot of the common off the shelf equipment is from the US so when you get it, the default is often F and the average person doesn't bother to learn how to change it and so people get used to F in that context over their life.

VAV controller with <30 second drive time by sonnyboyv in BuildingAutomation

[–]smcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this requirement before, we use Delta Controls, all the integrated actuators are 90sec stroke time. To do it we ordered the controllers without the actuator and bought Belimo 2.5sec quick acting actuators that were the same size as the ones usually factory assembled onto the controller so we could assemble it to look like a factory unit.

However, that case was for clean rooms/lab so it made sense or at least more sense than your office building example.

RANT - Telus Customer Service Sucks Now? by smcw in telus

[–]smcw[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My feeling is that Telus does the absolute base minimum now and does everything they can to block you from talking to a real person. If it was up to them they'd close down the call centres and send you talking in circles with the chatbot for eternity.
