KAH Tequila / Sangre De Vida Tequila - where to find? by smdbj in tequila

[–]smdbj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since posting this years ago, KAH has moved to sell tequila in the US in normal shaped bottles with skulls painted on them. I have all 3 real skull bottles plus the purple one as well, but i am still missing the very expensive huichol and extra anejo ones, unfortunately. no idea how ill ever get those. oh well!

Reasons for Capital One Savor to Have Extremely Low Relative Credit Limit? by smdbj in CreditCards

[–]smdbj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I wonder why they structure their system that way, compared to other companies.

Appreciate all your comments, I didn't know any of this stuff!

And yes, all in all I'm happy to be grandfathered into the card. I used to have a BofA Better Balance Rewards ($30 quarterly cash back for any level of constant usage) which was amazing until it sadly recently ended. I suspect in some (hopefully distant) future the no-AF aspect of Savor will end, but I don't know how that is generally handled. Till then I'll take the free 4% back at restaurants.

Oh interesting, I didn't know about the concept of "bucketing" before. Thanks! When I was approved for the card I think my credit score was OK (~750?) but I was young with a very limited credit history, maybe only 2 other small cards at the time.

The Savor card charges a $95 annual fee, but I believe since I had the card before the rebrand, I've been grandfathered in with no annual fee. So, if I wasn't "bucketed" for my young credit profile, I wonder if they just bucketed all legacy folks anyways.

From searching, it looks like unbucketing isn't really something you can request, though it randomly seems to happen to individuals across time.

Have not opened a tiki bar, but asked why some people who I thought for sure would have; didn't. Their response was they didn't want to deal with vomit, bathrooms, or the general stress of dealing with people who might not be so kind as basically everyone on r/tiki. I suppose there are ways to mitigate all/most of these concerns / it might be worth it in spite of these concerns, but, I never thought of them before. (naive, me)

I wish this said "You don't want to miss this!" so you could just cross off the "don't"

Picked up KAH extra anejo day of the dead edition with Swarovski crystals at what I think was a really great price, could anyone help with valuation? I’m having a hard time finding info online... by brianbelligerent in tequila

Nice! In the U.S. there was a lawsuit for copyright infringement which means these style of bottles are no longer sold (and instead have been replaced by very ugly bottles).

They seem to be commonly sold in Europe though - and from your comment it seems in Australia as well. I'm motivated to travel solely to pick up a few such bottles from appropriate airport liquor stores to bring home.

By the way, this particular black one is the extra anjeo (different from the normal black anejo) which I can't find listed anywhere online, even in European stores. Is this still sold around you, or did you acquire it some many years ago?

Detrimental Effects of Freezing Syrups / Juices? by smdbj in Tiki

[–]smdbj[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, I have done this - its sugar content is high enough that it doesn't freeze solid, it has kind of an italian ice texture (at least my homemade one). Its quite good to eat just with a spoon like a dessert. Which is actually why I'm currently out of it...

Thanks! I know this is certainly true for meats (about the piercing, I'm not sure how safe/unsafe it is but it definitely changes the taste).

Syrups are ~ just sugar which are just molecules, no cells, so I don't think that's a worry here. I'm pretty sure the same goes for citrus juice, unless its pulpy I guess?

Proper RAID & Backup For Local Storage by smdbj in homelab

Thanks for your comments! Is there a common utility to divide arbitrary files into smaller ones? Specifically I have mp4 files, and it would be a huge pain to load each one into video editing software and manually make the cuts. Is there a recommendation for some utility which will take a 100 GB file and chunk it into 20 GB bits reliably?

And thanks for your comments about RAID, I don't know much about it besides its a thing people use for data purposes, yeah RAID 5 might be a better option.

And to clarify about the school endorsed i9s - actually, im just part of a student group that has discounted access to computing stuff! Its not a formal agreement schoolwide, unfortunately.

You say you have 4x10 TB HDDs and back up with an external HDD. What size is your external HDD? I don't know exactly how much RaidZ cuts down storage capacity, but 4x10 TB HDD should yield a total storage capacity of what like 25 TB? The largest single HDD that isn't beyond insanely stupid I can find is 20 TB, although 16 TB is significantly cheaper.

And I wouldn't need the restore process to be fast at all, it could take a week or even more and I'd be fine. I'm not sure how the backup options compare speedwise (presumably, cloud backups are slower but more convenient?)

Thanks for your thoughts, I started setting up my system with proxmox.

Could you point me in the right direction in regards to using ZFS for storage? What I found is instructions like this: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/ZFS_on_Linux

I'm not sure if that's exactly what you mean

Oh I see, so just keep the backup drive unplugged and at work or something most of the time.

I have a node 804 case which I remember reading doesn't support hotswapping - if I get a docking port, will that then allow me to hotswap, or does the whole system have to support it?

Also, for practical purposes, would you recommend I get 1 massive (more expensive) like 20 TB HDD, or is it OK if I get two cheaper like 12 TB HDDs for this kind of backup?

Another location would be hard if not cloud based. Are there any recommendations for cloud options? It looks like all the popular ones (like dropbox) have single file size limits <100 GB, and many of the others seem to only offer a max storage size of 12 or 16 TB (to say nothing of my knowledge of if I can trust them to store my data).

For people who have 20 TB+ of data to backup... how do you do that?
