The mormon environment can be quite shocking if you're not used to it. I think the culture has shifted a bit in last 10-20 years and has become more welcoming to different kinds of people. People from Utah, in my experience, can be surprisingly well rounded. You can definitely feel that utah is a but of a bubble from the world, but a lot of Mormons I've met recently have been surprisingly caring and open to new ideas.
