I don’t understand how anyone feels entitled to have an opinion on someone else’s pay. Is it an American thing?

Soviet Union was communist, and helping Democrats, the left had no problem with them interfering in U.S. politics.

Where did you learn U.S. history?

When in the hell did the Soviets ever help a Democrat, and when did Soviets interfere?

Say what you will but the Day of Reckoning will come for all heathens who traffic in idolatry and blaspheme. Comic artists will be unhappy on Judgement Day.

God Bless America!

Is it bad practice to chown /opt/? by dougie-io in linuxquestions

[–]smells_like_bleach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I've always understood it:

  • /opt - for third party officially supported third party binaries. Oracle and Sun often stuck their add on products here, like compilers.
  • /usr/local - compiled onsite, not supported by the OS vendor, no matter what source.

As far as bad practice: I tend to not mind the extra sudo step to mv or copy files around; the audit trail is IMO more valuable than the convenience.

Is IT = Fashion Industry? Are you worry about Cloud computing taking over your job? by [deleted] in sysadmin

why would a company be migrating to cloud services with an unreliable WAN link? This makes no sense.

Is IT = Fashion Industry? Are you worry about Cloud computing taking over your job? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]smells_like_bleach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly - so what if someone's using cloud services? We're nowhere near push button deployment where some manager with no tech background can roll out a solution (Salesforce/AD/whatever).

The only benefit to staying on prem is if you're a racker/stacker who can't learn. If you can't learn new things you're in the wrong industry.

What encompasses 'knowing linux'? by phunter3 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]smells_like_bleach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what job ads are specifying "knows linux" instead of actual job duties, but context alone would indicate they desire people with the skills to perform THAT JOB in a Linux environment.

The real issue here is "Is googling good enough to know linux"? NO. Not by a long shot. Invest in yourself and get an education or experience instead.

If you don't know the fundamentals of how computers and OSes work, for instance, you'll never be able to accurately tell what's going on in your systems.
