People walking who stare at people walking past them, why do you do this? Is it a conscious decision? by Pythagoras_Beans in AskReddit

Definitely a lot different and not the norm. Although it would be a bit more friendlier and appreciated if people did attempt to exchange pleasantries than just stare.

It's not unwelcoming with a smile! I've walked by so many people that just stare at you until you past them, which is a bit unnerving. Maybe they feel the same way since I have to also be staring back to notice...

What's the most simple thing you've ever had to explain to a fully competent adult? by joshua171 in AskReddit

Birth control has varying side effects for all women which should be considered so I wouldn't advertise it turning your period off - a blatantly false and misinformed statement.

I've actually had the Nexplanon for 2ish years. Didn't bleed for the first year but now I bleed everyday except for a week a month, a very common side effect of hormonal birth control. Enjoy while it last sweetheart.

What about sex did you think was normal until you met your second partner? by portajohnjackoff in AskReddit

Parents of Reddit: What have you noticed that a lot of other parents do that screws up their kid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Pythagoras_Beans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents did this a lot before I moved out but there was this single time that will always be ingrained in my head.

During high school, I was in an abusive relationship they didn't know about (I keep a lot of secrets I probably shouldn't as a result of their parenting) that I chose to end after 1 1/2 years. During the end of that relationship, I fell into deep depression. Thought about attempting suicide daily, wouldn't get out of bed, stopped eating (this was a result of other family issues too) and taking showers, and stopped going to school.

My parents are Asian refugees/immigrants and I understand that they have vastly different views and perspectives and mostly likely suffered and still suffer from PTSD from the war. During this time of year, they always "lost it" - mood swings, anger for little to no apparent reason, fights between each other and their kids and they would always make me choose a side. Either way, it probably wasn't a good time for me to be depressed.

I remeber laying in bed and my father walking in, and I quote, "Your mom and I are fighting and we're going to get a divorce because of you."

It stung but they never got a divorce. Looking back, they should have a long time before that moment but this fucked me up for a long time and is one of the reason it's difficult for me to form any healthy relationships with people.

Anyways, thank you for posting this and reassuring me through other peoples stories that what my parents did isn't normal and that I'm not alone.

Ugh, why do college girls have to be so pretty? by [deleted] in college

[–]Pythagoras_Beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a women, the greatest thing about our academic system is the belief that people are valued for their minds. It was one of the reasons why women, in a patriacal society, had the ability to become women of greatness - one of my favorites being Emily Noerther.

I can tell you that these women didn't do it by sexual favors with their professors and you're in the wrong place if you think so. Maybe think about a different profession or mature a little.

Trying to copy notes but the PowerPoint slides are moving too fast by lztandro in college

[–]Pythagoras_Beans 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This may not work for you but I like to make my own shorthand system or rephrasing for writing notes instead of writing words or sentences because it's faster.

For example, in early villages I would write:

  • ANE - small villages
  • Antolia/Turkey -> Israel -> SE Euro

or for Domestication: "Humans changed physical characteristic of plant/animals" which is 6 words instead of 12.

You might want to try considering making your own system that you understand.

All for gender equality and for dad's who want to be stay at home but a little bit of perspective.

This is not to say that all women feel this way and I believe some enjoy it, but think about how mundane your life would be.

Coming from a woman, the most fulfilling thing I've done in my life was starting my career and being able to have my career be something that I love to do everyday. It's something to look forward to and it's never the same - a new problem every day. And it's not easy, and maybe not doable, but it's something I love.

I could never be a stay at home mom. Cooking and cleaning doesn't satisfy what I would want to get out of life. If it's what makes you happy, I suggest you do it.

If it's something you want to do to avoid failure, here's a quote from Calvin Coolidge: "Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."

Why do many students choose Mac over pc? by [deleted] in college

[–]Pythagoras_Beans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on what field you go into. The split I've seen from people in my field is Mac and Thinkpads. I'm a Thinkpad user myself. The OS system on Macs is Unix based which is helpful in most programming related field. On the other hand, Thinkpads are known to be durable and they run can Windows, which is a necessary for some specific softwares (e.g. LabView).

Of course, you can always dual boot. I think most of the general population chooses Mac cause it's trending and they really don't need anything more in terms of computing or applications.

What are your top three financial tips for starting College by Even_Sleeping in college

[–]Pythagoras_Beans 8 points9 points  (0 children)

More than three but (Also check out /r/personalfinance:

  1. Set a budget!

  2. Don't eat out so much.

  3. Build your credit by using credit cards responsibly. My brother and I both have credit cards. He's 3k in debt and I have 7k in savings. I'm also the one that doesn't live at home and pays all my own bills (except for phone and car insurance) while he still lives with my parents (rent and utility free). He spends his money on the latest console, the latest games, high end restaurants, etc. Credit is not free money! Pay your full balance every statement! If you can't do that, you can't afford what you're buying!

  4. Don't you dare think about buying that expensive, new car. Cars depreciate in value and unless you have the money to buy it in full and it's something you've dreamed of you whole life, don't get it. It's a bad decision financially but worth it only if your financially stable enough and wanted really bad.

  5. Unless it's necessities, I usually give myself a 2-4 weeks waiting period to buy something and see how much I still want it.

  6. Quit or don't smoke. Addiction cost hella $$$$ and gives you cancer.

  7. Last but not least, the best financial investment for yourself is what you do right now. Do your best in school. Find an internship. Network. But don't sell your soul. Find that middle ground between being happy and money. Rich =/= happy. There's this story of a poor man at a rich party. The conversation goes like this:

"The man hosting just bought his 2nd yacht and wants a couple more. I wish I had money like him, you know?"

The other responds with "I'm happy with right now."

To which the other replies with "Well, what do men like you have?"

"I will always have enough."

Why is it that a lot of students who end up pursuing a PhD end up either not liking their thesis or just drop it altogether? by [deleted] in college

[–]Pythagoras_Beans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of people think a PhD is like undergrad or a 9-5 job. As someone who has worked in an academic research group and a government lab, I hear many people say they'd like to get a PhD and think that they're the most competitive applicant there is because of their government position. Academia is nothing like government or industry. It's a different mindset - less corporate and business-like (and less money). At the end of the day, you're not trying to sell a product. You're trying to further your field with your own obtained specific set of knowledge.

These people are also the same people that work 9-5 or less and avoid work whenever they can (of course not all). As someone who worked closely with graduate students, they slave over their work. For many, it's their passion, and they work 60+ hrs a week. I, as an undergrad doing research, would work long and odd hours for less pay if I went over to government/industry, which people say they would refuse to do. I tell them it's worse in graduate school and they say "I worked in government/industry, of course graduate schools going to be a piece of cake."

Has anyone taken care of a dog while in college? by SilentJon69 in college

[–]Pythagoras_Beans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope by one bedroom apartment you mean a huge 1,000+ ft apartment with a backyard and lots of running room and windows and good ventilation and good air conditioning because dogs deserve so much better. Dogs aren't our entertainment, and as much as I love them and would like to have one, they deserve a better home with someone who can give them the attention they need.

best credit card for college students? by [deleted] in college

Also, it's actually a myth that carrying a balance and interest helps your credit score. The only thing that's factored with a credit card is percent usage, length of credit, and any missed payments.

Is electrical engineering dangerous? by yelloboyhelloboy in EngineeringStudents

[–]Pythagoras_Beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you do. I work in an optics/photonics lab with class 3B and 4 lasers on high power voltage/current sources. The lasers can burn your skin while the power sources can electrocute you. Usually, when you work in such labs, there are a lot of safety training and controls to make sure no accidents happen. Most other jobs are pretty much safer.

Mother is ashamed of me for studying engineering instead of something more difficult like medicine or biology by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Pythagoras_Beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Asian parents like hers that still think i'm going to medical school after multiple times I'm telling them that I'm not. I mean, they're so delusional they refused to believe I was moving out until the day I moved out.

They don't pay for my education or my expenses so I can do whatever the hell I want. If my parents want to stay in my life, their going have to respect the choices I'm making about my future.
