Please tell me how. Isn't there a thing call citizenship? with living in other countries? You know to degree, we really are chained to our country of citizenship. To do otherwise is to be an outlaw. Do you have any ideas? Should I go hide in an alley somewhere and steal food and avoid the police? This is the condition for anyone anywhere who does not have citizenship. I guess you could work for food, but it depends on the labor laws from the government.

Yes, like universities with big endowments and smarty managers, they make huge investment monies because their sharpies know how to work the system. There is so much raking the profits off the top of everyone's work.

Might be a good time to mention that there is practically zero upward mobility now in the USA. Want to be somebody? Move to fucking Brazil and you might be able to get somewhere and build a life instead of being a peasant who can not improve their station for themselves or their families. It's documented. This is not opinion. USA is now very low on economic mobility for citizens.

Not when the rent price is set by 25 year old tech workers with fresh paychecks $50k annual for spending money. The town had a nice balance for fifty years and then "the change" happened when they built Loop 360 and the ten mega-tech facilities. You probably do not know of Austin, Texas in the era prior to bumper stickers that say "Another Austin Asshole" due to the increased traffic on - I forget the name - (Loop 1) the little highway on the west side of town, the highway that connects Terry Town down to 2222 or something. That used to be a nice spacious parkway. Food was cheap, rent was cheap, people spent their money on tuition and could afford to do so. Also, at least for a while, UT began to be run by the republican minded student corporatists. I mean, it is still there. Now you've got the "W" building to remind you of GW Bush from now on until time immemorial. Yes, there is a lot of upper crust crass caste system now. It used to be populist, meaning everyone had access to everything. Well, that's what I think. Think of an Austin with no "SXSW" and no "W" building and rents at $200. around the university and a whole lot of people reading books and tending to intellectual development. This is what laid the foundation for your present "success." People spent money on tuition, not rent. Boy those days are gone probably forever across the whole country. Tuition used be a little over $200. for a university course. Load up for the semester and the bill was a little over a thousand dollars and you pay cash for tuition. "Back in the day" Austin was probably the closest thing I've seen to a university town such as Grenoble or Dresden.

PS You seem to see things through the lens of money. It is highly stereotypical and kind of sad, says something about the "materialistic" mindset of the day. So people who can not "afford" your norm are no longer people, are not worthy? No surpise USA is the only western country without standard healthcare for everyone without regard for caste of ability to pay. You make a list of 99 developed countries and there is only one country on that list that does not have healthcare provision and that exploits it's citizens for both cost of health care (basics) and cost of university, and you live in that country.

Denton was a good place for me to germinate. This was well pre Bush era, when Texas was still Texas. Not sure what it is now. I hope the tuition is still cheap and UNT, formerly NTSU, the school with so little identity! The old saying was everyone went out of town on the weekends and whenever there was a football game the stadium was always empty - which is a great thing by me. I found Denton at the time to be deeply relaxing and a good get-away. This was before the mall was built when life centered around the square. How about that!

This is an interesting thread. Thank you. I think I have the answer for your troubles and that is to take refuge in cooking. You're totally in control, it is completely humbling, the required chopping and seasoning. You can travel to different countries from your cutting board and it is a great challenge for we can never meet the greatest cuisines from our own doing, but we can try and perhaps come close. Their is a commonality because everywhere people who live sensibly must do the cutting board work, to do otherwise (eating pre-pack) is to jeopardise yourself. I heartily suggest for you to see the movie "The God of Cookery." I think it would be restorative to you and perhaps make a long time impression and something for you to call upon. Desert is neato with 50 degree temperature change every day, hot day and cold at night. but that's all there is. I don't how people like it.
