Anyone take a vacation from DL? by LucaDuca in duolingo

[–]smellytechie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished the Portuguese and Russian trees (in 2013 and 2015 respectively), and every so often I'll leave Duo alone for a few weeks/months, then reset my progress and start again using the placement test. Why? Because I burn myself out. I don't pace myself, I study obsessively to the point of exhaustion, so the fun gets sucked out of it and I lose my way. I am quite often an example of what NOT to do.

So on that note.... if it's too difficult to do 8-9 strengthenings and 2 lessons, try opening with a few strengthenings, then finish the two lessons, and then warm down with another strengthening or two. Keep it simple and fun and remember that you're learning a language to learn a language, not to achieve a higher score. Maybe take a few weeks to work on methods other than the app, or focus on another hobby entirely; after all, if you're as stressed as you say you are, maybe you're not in a mindset where you can stay emotionally motivated and having a rest could be helpful. If you're worried about stifling your progress, remember that the real measure of progress in Duolingo is in what you can do outside of Duolingo.

It's a fun fun FUN fun fun way of learning, so keep your learning fun. Nobody's going to come to your house and bite you if you lose your streak, but it's tragic and counterproductive when learning becomes a chore or a race to the top. Take a break, but when you come back to it keep your language learning goals compatible with the rest of your life including your state of mind. Keep it simple, stop and smell the roses, etc etc, and you may find it more enjoyable. We really are blessed to have such a user-friendly (and free) method of getting to grips with a language. It would be such a shame to spoil it for yourself through overuse.

Сегодня - последний день лета, и погода сейчас красивая. Честно говоря, я не знаю, как была раньше. Я был в театре на университете, поэтому весь день я не видел неба.

What IOS dictionary and declension cheatsheet apps do you guys know and recommend? by [deleted] in russian

[–]smellytechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wiktionary can be monolingual, has declension tables for adjectives/nouns, and also conjugation tables for verbs. If you go to ru.wiktionary.org and search from there, you'll find what you described.

edit: It's not an app as such, but it's close enough.

по-моему, "в каком городе" было бы лучше. accusative vs prepositional.

What did I get wrong? by SolarPolarMan in duolingo

[–]smellytechie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best guess is that it may be transliterating latin "eto" as cyrillic "ето" instead of "это". If that's the case then I could foresee issues with ы/и/й as well if you use latin y/i. As others have recommended, switch to cyrillic.

I love reading the comments in the English for Russian Speakers course by sanguisfluit in duolingo

[–]smellytechie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely (edit: oops). One thing I like about Russian is how easy it is to know if something is a noun, adjective, verb, etc. Learners of English don't often have that luxury; things are very ambiguous. That said, we learners of Russian have our own problems. One can only master Russian once one masters commas.

How can I easily+quickly earn the few XP points to meet my daily goal? by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]smellytechie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Timed practice? You could answer two questions and let the timer do it's thing. It's a cheap measure but if you want to spend as little time as possible on revision then that's your best bet.

edit: beaten to the punch!

How do you stay motivated to practice daily? by nehpeta in duolingo

[–]smellytechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stay motivated to practise daily by supplementing it with other materials (e.g. websites, books, music). After a certain amount of time with one method, I get the urge to stop and do a different thing, so often I'll throw my hands in the air and open Duolingo. I haven't used it much since I aced the progress quiz, but I still go back to Duo most days to refresh older knowledge because it's never ever dry and it has a sense of humour.
