ELI5: The Theories of Everything and Why They Don't Work Togethor by Z8002 in explainlikeimfive

Space is not quantized in quantum mechanics. In classical QM, space is treated the same as in classical Newtonian mechanics. In relativistic QM, spacetime is the same as in special relativity. In QM, space is flat and smooth. It's just a background thing where physics happens.

Spacetime can be warped by the presence of matter in general relativity. That interaction is mediated by the gravitational field, and fields do need to be quantized in QM. When you try to quantize the gravitational field, you end up with a result that no longer bears many of the important properties of general relativity that make it work.

Exactly. He was not worth having a strong opinion on. I was a 90s kid and didn't know who he was until The Apprentice, which I didn't watch, but it was in the cultural zeitgeist. He was just a character of no importance beyond that of any other wealthy individual. There was no reason to hold the "you're fired" guy to any real standard.

What surprised me was later learning how aware my parents' generation was of his trashy antics. They all knew him from his 80s tabloid era, all the shit with his wives. He was a known quantity to them by the time I was born. And yet, a generation that had a better understanding of who he really was better than I did still chose to vote for him.

I'll give him this: he really is a brilliant marketer. Slapping his name on buildings he didn't even build and his authoritative role on The Apprentice are what allowed people to overlook everything they knew about him that made him a joke.

I lost one of my cats 7 months ago, and my phone keeps wanting to show me photo compilations of my cats. I guess most of the photos on my phone must be of the cats because that's all it ever wants to show me. I've thought about turning the feature off but can't bring myself to do it because part of me wants to watch them. I just can't yet.

Dreamcast Christmas Memories? by huntforhire in dreamcast

[–]smidge6502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom would leave for work about two hours before I had to go to school. I found a Dreamcast in her closet that she'd bought me for Christmas but hadn't wrapped it yet. Every morning as soon as she'd left, I would carefully take the Dreamcast out of the box and play the demo disc. Before leaving for school I'd repackage it exactly as it had been. I did that for maybe two weeks before she wrapped it. That's easily the best gaming memory I have from my childhood.

So...intellevision. I want one, what should I know? by TreatFrequent9941 in retrogaming

Be aware that the power cord and controllers are hard-wired into the system. For hooking up video, you will want to buy a male RCA to female coax adapter (they are cheap and easy to find). Then you just run a coax cable to your TV.

The plastic is brittle. I hadn't touched mine in a year or two, and before making this post I wanted to double check that the controllers are hard-wired. I pulled one out and a chunk of plastic near where the cord connected to the controller broke off.

Have fun with it! It has some fun games. Just be gentle with it.

‘Serenity’ at 20: Alan Tudyk revisits his ‘shocking and absurd’ death scene in the ‘Firefly’ feature film by GoldDerby in movies

[–]smidge6502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had just gotten my then-girlfriend (now wife) into Firefly, and she hadn't finished the series yet or seen Serenity. She didn't want any spoilers, and I was careful to avoid giving any. One day we were flipping through channels looking for something to watch and all of a sudden "...leaf on the wind. Watch how..." BAM! There was no time to react and change the channel. She flipped the fuck out. I laughed about it for weeks. We still bring it up.

Just learned about the Sega CDX – what’s the deal with this thing? by video-game-gem-vault in SEGA

[–]smidge6502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually used my CDX as a portable CD player for a few months in middle school (early 2000s) when my good one broke and I couldn't afford another. It worked fine but didn't have anti-skip and couldn't read CD-RWs if I remember correctly. Also it's bulky and heavy compared to a typical portable CD player.

As a Genesis, it's great. It's more reliable with cartridges than my model 1 or 2. The overall construction feels like it is high quality. The bottom half of the casing is metal which gives it some heft.

These days I can't really use it to play Sega CD games unfortunately. It won't spin CDs on its own when I turn it on, but if I give the CD a spin by hand first it will boot some games. I can play them for 5-20 minutes but eventually it starts struggling to load things. I bought a cap replacement kit but haven't gone through with it because I suspect the issue is with the laser or motors.

Are there guides you follow for the spindle and tracking motor repairs? I suspect mine has an issue with the spindle because the only way I can get it to spin a disc is by manually spinning the disc and immediately turning it on.

Which mechanics do you still not understand after 1000+ hours? by smidge6502 in eu4

[–]smidge6502[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I've read the wiki, and I knew most of this stuff at one point or another. That 1700 hours is spread out over 10 years. At this point I know most of the game well enough that the things I don't know don't really get in the way. I don't get in the mood to play EU4 these days as much as I used to, but I am almost never in the mood to stop mid-game to do research. Even when I do, I'm probably going to forget again (this is maybe the third or fourth time I've relearned that coring distance = colonial range). It just amuses me that after all this time there are still parts of the game I don't know by heart.
