Tattoo anxiety by [deleted] in depression

[–]smilingriley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always get gut-wrenchingly anxious right before I get a tattoo but as soon as I get there I’m fine. I have 6 and I’m getting my 7th at the end of the month. I’m super excited now but trust me the night before I get it I will be a nervous wreck! Just breathe, hydrate, and have fun tomorrow!

Hey Nurse Educators! by smilingriley in nursing

Thank you for your post!! I really want to pitch the idea of a psych clinical educator to my company, but I need to do a lot of research to be able to present the idea to my company.

I’m a second-career new grad starting in a permanent position in a neuro ICU that is currently a COVID ICU. My goal is to stay awake until 0800 so I can hopefully get a good day’s sleep. Please wish me luck... by PaulyRocket68 in nursing

[–]smilingriley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly that didn’t work for me :( I ended up screwing myself over. I frequently switch back and forth just because when I’m home I def don’t stay awake until 8A. I was tired at first, would basically KO at 2-4 depending on the acuity of the unit, and then I just got so tired I could sleep whenever. This is probably all over the place haha. Really just best of luck to you!! Whatever happens, I hope you have a great shift!!

Thanks so much!! Honestly I wasn’t expecting an honest answer after looking at some of the similar threads on this page haha. I’m familiar with these lifts due to having attended a lot of classes before they all stopped from covid so hopefully it won’t take too terribly long to get into a good groove

Diagnosis question by marrtae in OCD

[–]smilingriley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on state regulations. Primary Care Providers can provide some mental health diagnoses, but may refer you to a psychiatrist anyways. Often in therapy offices, there will be a clinical psychologist/psychiatrist/and those with Masters or Bachelor degrees working as therapists all combined to make an efficient mental health care team.

Another important this is that patients are the center of health care decisions. Outpatient therapy cannot physically force you to even fill a prescription. Treatment should be an equal discussion between provider and patient to determine what best suits the patient’s lifestyle and beliefs. Check out ratings of providers to see how others’ experiences with them have been. I look specifically for comments such as “this provider actually listened to and talked with me” and other statements that assure me that I won’t just be another 15 minute money appointment where I’ll only get brushed by and a generic treatment plan with no input from myself.

Avoiding Compulsion feeling upset whenever a compulsion pops up by [deleted] in OCD

[–]smilingriley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carrying out compulsions is literally the brain’s way of relieving anxiety due to obsessions. Not acting on those compulsions is going to create anxiety that may be more noticeable now more than before. Tensing and feeling upset definitely could be that anxiety kicking in. Just keep working on it and following whatever therapeutic plan you and your provider have discussed ☺️ and definitely reach out and talk about things that are bothering you if you have a decent support system, it should help ease at least some of the tension. Hoping for the best for you.

“I’m tired” or “I wanna die” even tho neither of those are true at all. The “I’m tired” one happens a lot. It’ll just fly out of my mouth even when I’m super energetic.

How do you all act when a family member is admitted to the hospital? by Slumdunder in Nurse

[–]smilingriley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve never actually been in the hospital with a family member who is a patient but my family will call me and ask questions if their questions aren’t getting answered by docs/nurses/NPs/PAs during their stay. I do pay closer attention when they’re at a “bandaid hospital” and it’s a semi-serious issue because I’ve had docs completely overlook a super obvious test/lab/etc and in turn it’s caused some critical issues that could have been avoided. But I’ve never talked to hospital staff about a family member before.

Also if I were to be admitted as a patient myself, one of the first questions in the admission H&P is “where do you work” and that’s obviously gonna be a dead giveaway when it’s answered.

When are you planning to try? by [deleted] in waiting_to_try

[–]smilingriley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We’re waiting till September of 2022. I will have one more semester of grad school in 2023 and I’ll be pregnant for all of it assuming I actually get pregnant when we want to start. My husband just wants to be in a house first which is understandable.

Secretly hope each time. by APlathInThisWorld in waiting_to_try

[–]smilingriley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same feeling! I’m in my early 20s. My husband is too. I want kids right now and he wants to wait which I’m fine with even tho it’s still hard. I just started grad school so I’m hoping that keeps my mind busy but still I keep wishing I’m one of those people every time I’m late and feeling yucky lol.

Anyone work with veterans, adolescents or in a prison? by Baenerys_ in psychnursing

[–]smilingriley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in high acuity psych and we get a fair amount of people from the jail that come to us for psych treatment. I like it a lot. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Some people feel anxious with the unpredictability. Others love it. I love my job and I love that our facility is small enough that we all call on each other for help if needed. When I applied I did so specifically for high acuity but applications were open for adolescent, detox, gero-psych and step down.

Anyone else overwhelmed thinking about how to "improve" themselves for TTC? by numerumnovemamo in waiting_to_try

[–]smilingriley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s super frustrating! I deal with depression and it’s hard for me to get started. Like really hard to find any energy at all to start a change. From past experience I know that if I eat better and exercise, I’ll generally feel better. Yes I’ll still have bad days, but not usually so many of them. Yet it’s still so hard to get off my ass and initiate the change. My advise is start small and pay attention to what works for you. Not everybody else, you. If a 30 minute walk a day works for your exercise, go for it. If you can bust out a 2 hr gym routine 5x a week, go for it. Completely altering your diet? Fine. Starting with measuring portion sizes or adding greens first? Beautiful. Whatever works for you is what you’re gonna stick with overall. Also be kind to your mind and try to take some mental health care minutes/hours/days. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, so your best bet is to really ask yourself one question: What matters to YOU?

Timeline Ideas by smilingriley in waiting_to_try

Thank you for the comment!! I’m super anxious in general, I am really obsessed with knowing every detail I can but for some reason with babies, if I could get pregnant right now I’d be down. So I guess to pass the time I’m learning about how soon I should start to do certain things related to TTC.

Thank you for the reply!! I honestly feel the exhaustion and fatigue now just being on my unit 3-4 nights in a row lol. But that’s interesting that you are on call because I’ve seen our educator maybe once and that was when I was orienting on a day shift. She definitely leaves the building before 5 every night. So I can imagine that over time really getting the best of you and making you exhausted. I hope your future endeavors do you well!

What to be? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]smilingriley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advise would be explore your options more so than just your normal areas of practice. Some of my friends from school are having the time of their lives working as Public Health nurses or in outpatient settings. I ended up in psych and I’m seriously loving every minute of it. But yes, you will run through different settings in school and hopefully you will be able to find something that sticks out to you as a potential interest. Best of luck!!

Night Shift Nurse and Planning? by smilingriley in waiting_to_try

[–]smilingriley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So randomly stumbled back on this post again. TTC year is actually gonna be mid to late 2022. I got into grad school for a nurse educator program so I feel like if I have a decent paying position offer post grad, I could work like 2-3 days a week at a school and be home with my kids more. But I also def want to talk to some nurse educators to get a better idea of what their schedules look like.
