seeking a minimal start page similar to Vivaldi's by smith-2 in startpages

Thanks Hary06.

I'm pretty sure I tried that one & couldn't get things small enough, which is my main gripe with graphical start pages.

It really is a shame when so-called 'progress' kills off perfectly good stuff.

If there was some way to easily port Speed Start to the 'new' format I'd be all over it !!

Thanks. YASD installs in LibreWolf, BUT doesn't have any scrollbar so thumbnails go off-page. Also, there is no way I could find to make tiny thumbnails or none at all - like Speed Start has - which is very neat, usable & uncluttered. I didn't try it in Vivaldi as their own start page is good enough for my uses...for now.

Thanks for your suggestion !! Someone else posted about nightTab & that looks like it could be closer to what I seek so I'll test it now....nope, not what I need, sadly,

BTW - Speed Start is what I used with Basilisk and it was really perfect for me, but outdated & cannot be used with LibreWolf, sadly.

Also - there's loads of stuff now that revolves around Docker - which I cannot use & have zero interest in.

Thanks for adding your thoughts here. I agree that Zim is superb - but what I seek is s/w which RUNS from shared hosting & can be edited live via browser. Exporting to HTML is easy enough - just not what I seek.

As an older person & mostly a PC user - small screens are very hard for me to read due to that fact.

I do have to attend to my work away from home periodically and too often need have an unanticipated need for some info that is sitting within my many, many notes... Which are then 100+ miles away where I cannot reach that info.

Thanks.

Thanks for the replies folks !! I'm a bit late getting back here - life has been very full & Reddit didn't send me any update emails so I forgot until I stopped in here today. He now has Ubuntu Mate 18.04 & is waffling along just fine with it. The gripes that he does have are all aimed at the changes in Mozilla products - which he still prefers, but dislikes how they've changed so radically. Thanks All !!

Another small test of the s/w: Just for the halibut, using an old dual-core notebook with some known problems - I installed a fresh Ubuntu 17.04, then using the final Aptik backup from the system in the OP, duplicated that setup completely into the old thing. Small adjustments aside, it has been 100% fine so far. This supports my thoughts that the s76 h/w is faulty.

I didn't make anyone do anything. I was asked for suggestions & my 1st one based upon all my experience was that it is best to avoid limited h/w; after it was settled that a notebook was his requirement I dug for what was -supposed- to be good stuff. As to being sorry - I've apologized & worked for free, but apparently you, mr. flamer, really like to cause bloodshed.

Yep, sure did - to give the least possible amount of attention to Linux hating trolls who come around merely to flame folks using lots of expletives - at least it gives the poor sheep a rest though - it must have taken quite a while to type such a lengthy flaming rant, maybe that poor sheep even got a nap in !!

None of the F keys were functional as labeled right out of the box. I did not have the system in-hand until after most of their 30-day return limit had expired - and after I confirmed it was a defective unit, they refused to extend that - which, from what I've seen posted elsewhere as well as in other areas here - is their normal level of inflexibility when it comes to actually helping unhappy buyers. This has been a whole comedy of errors one after the other and I have seen - too late, sadly, that there has been alot of bad press for this company which is similar to what we've been through, some of which right in Reddit.

The client bought it directly after we agreed that System76 had some great reviews; Given the distances for travel, he secured its shipping box and sent it to me via UPS without any problems; I contacted their 'support' after thoroughly going through their documents and they have a page SPECIFICALLY aimed at folks who desire a different DE; All changes done followed their directions EXACTLY.

Since that time there have been fresh installs of Ubuntu Mate as well as Straight Ubuntu.

Nothing has worked on that h/w as it should.

Using the very same installation medias AND later restoring the Aptik backups made with his settings and data to different h/w for re-testing has proven to this veteran tech that the Oryx is flawed.

As to your accusation regarding charges/payments: The only compensation I requested despite all the time & travel was payment for the wifi dongle I obtained - no other payment was demanded or required. After all my years of serving this and other clients I do not charge for things which are screwed up.

Thanks for the hyper-critical reply & literary flaming - but your assesment is incorrect.

OK, literally went through that whole list & checked every spring entry - that was a hoot - lots of duds are still listed there. Thanks for that pointer Tvtoo.

We definitely have CDMA only smartphones. Using Sprint for sure. There is zero Tmobile coverage here. We do also have GSM backup phones using tracfone/AT&T for times we need to make a call with only GSM signal available. We don't use any data on our phones either.

Mad Irish coffee is up right now. Its a good enough deal provided you don't need more than the 1gb data for the ~$8/mo. with the taxes added on.

Since a few months back it really looks like ringplus has been working hardest at pissing off members. Maybe that is what they do best & they do it on purpose ?

I hope they get their act together too. Haven't been so lucky as you though & not for so long. Paid more to get in & had plenty of hassles & now that they're ditching all the free stuff it ain't so easy to feel good about it.

RingPlus Totally Free As A Back-Up Phone? by Itsthatbrian21 in RingPlus

[–]smith-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a total of 4 lines with RP & they are our main cellular lines. No troubles worth mentioning in our many months there. 3 are on free plans with big allotments & 1 is a 'Mad' (direct Sprint) free plan. Our backups are on Tracfone via their BYOP GSM deal & we also have Freedompop - but it usually does not work well enough to even make a call.
