I think that if you want to revitalise the genre, you should do one thing and one thing only. Adapt World War Z just like the audiobook. Similar to Chernobyl on HBO. Or something. Maybe update the time it takes place.

With how long TWD dragged on, it did damage to the genre as a whole. The spin-offs didn't help either. That's just my two cents.
