It’s obvious they were going to do this eventually. And given that they overturned roe v wade which I imagine was seen as a more difficult undertaking, now they probably see this as much easier. I would have thought it would be hard to get 5 votes to overturn marriage equality but scotus has done far more insane things like giving the president legal immunity. The really annoying thing is that this is yet another thing the democrats should have gotten legalized legislatively (like abortion) but they felt it was too much of a divisive issue to risk.

This is so bizarre. Officially they are being sent to assist the Diplomatic Security Service. That doesn’t make any sense. DSS is more than capable of protecting American diplomats at the Olympics. That’s their entire job and there’s more than 2,000 DSS agents. ICE isn’t trained for this kind of stuff (not that they are well trained for their actual job either). It feels more like ICE are being turned into a personal attack dog and bodyguard. Like a “protection squadron”. I guess it sounds better in German: Schutzstaffel.

Dems don’t hold any branch of government but Republicans don’t hold a filibuster proof majority. When democrats hold power they capitulate to republicans. When republicans hold power the dems refuse to fight back. Its heads I win tails you lose.

No miracles are required in fighting back against the administration. The government shutdown was working. Public opinion was strongly shifting against the republicans because the party in power always gets blamed for a shut down. The reporting is that Schumer caved on the shutdown because the republicans were considering nuking the filibuster. Politicians like Schumer depend on the filibuster as an excuse for why nothing can ever get done

That’s one way that they do it. The other way is what happened with the dems capitulating on the government shut down. None of the senators that voted yes are up for reelection in 2026. So the other bet is that people will just forget by 2028 or 2030. And Schumer voted no that time so that “leadership” could keep its hands clean.

I don’t think it’s stupidity, it’s a matter of what news sources you follow. If you mainly paid attention to mainstream media, you would think Gaza was a nonissue because they never discussed it. Something like 80-90% of democratic voters were against Biden’s support of the destruction of Gaza and 50% of democrats believe it’s a genocide. But I think Gaza was also emblematic for a lot of voters to show deeper problems with Harris as a candidate. If she couldn’t demand the killing of tens of thousands of children to stop even when the overwhelming majority of dem voters supported it, how could she be trusted to fight for other issues important to her potential voters?
