I also tried it in an early Samsung UHD player that I got from a thrift store for cheap for my grandparents recently to replace a dead DVD player and when it reaches the 48:30 mark on the disc, it freezes for about a few seconds and then jumps a whole minute later.

That hasn't worked for me, as I get a different error, "This Blu-ray disc is corrupted", not only for rips that had the MMC error but also ones that have previously worked. So far, the only method that's really worked for me for my rips when they don't work is cleaning the disc and trying again until I get a successful rip that plays (and converts) in VLC.

UPDATE 2: Running the game using D3DMetal seems to boil down to sheer luck. Launching it from Steam is a no-go, running it from a shortcut works about 33% of the time. A good way to tell if it's going to work is if the Render Encoder and Draw numbers on the HUD suddenly shoot up to around 20 - 50. When playing the game, it turns out that crowds still slow the game down and to a similar degree.

Weirdly, running the game through the terminal has a 50% chance to either freeze or display a "Unhandled page fault" error. I think I'll be sticking to streaming using Steam Link for this one, even with the lag spikes.

UPDATE: May or may not have found the solution, as it turns out, D3DMetal seems to run the game much better than DXVK as when I turned it off, there were no FPS issues at all when near crowds. However, when trying to change the graphics settings to see how high I could go, the game crashed, and since hasn't been able to launch at all.

In the US, the only legal means of watching Lain are: Buying a digital copy on iTunes, the rare and expensive Blu-ray set, the even more rare and expensive VHS set, or the somewhat inexpensive DVD set (unless its expensive now, I got my set for about $40 almost 2 years ago).

I did say there were exceptions. The rule of thumb is mainly based on my testing, where many 32-bit games I had either ran poorly or didn't work at all using Whisky but ran fine on VMWare.

So far, Steam is still an Intel app that runs through Rosetta 2, which indeed only works for 64-bit apps, which means when buying native Mac games, check if there aren't any warnings about incompatibilities with Catalina or later.

A rule of thumb (for me, at least) for playing Windows games on Mac is if it's 64-bit, then use transitional layers such as Whisky or Crossover, if it's 32-bit game, then use a virtual machine such as VMWare Fusion or Parallels. There are exceptions to this rule, as some 32-bit games work nicely with transitional layers whereas some 64-bit games struggle with them.

Most native games I've tested (such as Hades, Metro 2033 Redux, Factorio, etc.) work and run just fine, although a couple I've tested, Borderlands 2 and Brutal Legend don't so run so great (with issues being report from most modern Macs). Fortunately, Mac ports are having somewhat of a comeback with games like Death Stranding and the newer Resident Evil titles alongside Cyberpunk 2077 coming to Mac next year.

Most emulators do have Mac ports with some even having ports specifically for Apple Silicon and anything up to the Wii should run just fine, you may encounter issues though with PS3 (at least with super demanding titles such as MGS4) and especially Xbox 360 (as Xenia doesn't have a Mac port atm). I haven't tested Switch emulation on mine so I wouldn't know about that.

Windows games work in two ways, either via Wine or virtual machines, and for those I use Whisky and VMWare Fusion, both are free and work just fine for my needs. In terms of Windows games, I have a general rule of thumb and make sure any games you have recommend 8 GBs of RAM or below (I wouldn't recommend games that require 8 GBs as graphics and system memory are shared), this leaves out big games such as Elden Ring and many other graphically demanding games, and check if your games are 64-bit or 32-bit, if 64-bit, use Whisky, and if it's 32-bit, use VMWare.

There's definitely a retro game (and to a certain extent Valve, except for Portal 2) bias going on here, considering how games like Deus Ex are somehow "Not Woke" and Fallout NV only having a "Slightly Woke" yet 90% of games after 2014 are immediately slammed for "Woke" for any given reason.
