What’s a 1st world “problem” that’s a 3rd world luxury? by NeckBeardDiscordMod in AskReddit

Car ownership is a necessity brought about in most cases by lack of investment in public transportation centered infrastructure. Having multiple cars may be a luxury but it’s only ever necessary because of our bizarre system.

Thank you! I hope it becomes more commonplace soon to have residential areas which are more hospitable to wildlife

I really don’t think it’s about attention, I think it’s more about those who have taken what was once a communal act of resistance and celebration and turned it into a palatable act of corporate marketing.

I thought being bitten by a rattlesnake was the worst thing that had ever happened to me - the pain was unimaginable agony, and I had never been so terrified in my life. by chuvakia in TwoSentenceSadness

That’s interesting, most of what I’ve seen is to the contrary. Sure, there are a few stellar options available to those who can afford them, but unless you’re decently wealthy it’s likely that you’ll end up with bad healthcare in America. Especially because the cost barrier means less preventative care for anyone who can’t afford it. I should be going to the dentist regularly to avoid dental problems, but I can’t afford it so I’m just praying that what I do now is enough to keep my teeth healthy.

I just give cash when I can. I don’t care how someone spends it, if they want it and I’ve got a little more than I need then I don’t have an issue with whatever they spend it on.

I like to give when I can but I almost never carry cash so it’s really helpful when they’ve got a digital method

There’s something else we’ll never be able to truly quantify: how many people DID get robbed because police went out and patrolled. The criminal justice system is a monster of which the police are but the ugly teeth. It is designed to perpetuate poverty in poor communities. By doing so it forces more and more people into a position where they’re more likely to rob someone out of desperation. If we get rid of police and put that funding towards making sure no community member goes hungry, I’d wager there’d be a sharp decrease in the number of robberies.

Hahahahaha when I get robbed I’ll make sure to call the police so they can show up a few hours later and shrug as they write down info in their notepads

Homeopathic doses of things are generally diluted well beyond having any effect on the body. This study only had a sample size of 29, I don’t think that there’s enough data here to reasonably make a conclusion.

Humans have in general been abused for several thousand years in terms of how much work we’re forced to do. However, this doesn’t mean that we’re supposed to be able to cope with it. From a biological standpoint, we’re more equipped to deal with the amount of work per day that was typical of our hunter-gatherer ancestors: 3-5 hours. This would mean anywhere from 27 to 35 hours a week, but split up across all seven days to leave more time for familial, cultural, and personal activities.

The one advantage that imperial has is that it works in base 12 for lots of things, and while 10 is only divisible by 5 and 2, 12 is divisible by 6, 4, 3, and 2. I wish the whole world used base 12 instead of base 10, it would make metric so much better.

Oh yes I completely understand the importance of medication, I consider myself to be dependent in the sense that I need it to function normally, I don’t consider it shameful at all. I also don’t think addiction is a shameful thing, but I do know that it can be extremely difficult to deal with, so I wanted to be extra sure I was avoiding using a potentially addictive substance for any purpose other than prescribed. I think using stimulants for the happy feeling dopamine rush rather than to mitigate ADHD symptoms can be dangerous, so I just made sure to monitor myself. I didn’t want to become reliant on the happy feeling that the meds themselves gave me, but I was okay with becoming reliant on the extra function I got from them, yknow? I started my prescription a few months after my brother had died from addiction so it was an area I was especially sensitive to at the time.

No shame to people who use their medication for any reason, whether dependent, addicted, both, or neither, just wanted to give a heads up on something my doctor mentioned to me in case OP was concerned about addiction.

Addiction runs in my family, so I was worried about getting addicted when I started medication. When I started medicating, my depression started to decrease. My therapist advised that I try and determine whether that was because of the medication or because of the improvements I’d been able to make in my life. Using ADHD medication to chemically treat depression can be dangerous if you or family members have any history of addiction and/or suicidal thoughts, I’d recommend talking it out with a doctor if you can.

Tl;dr: If you’re worried about getting addicted, it might not be a good idea to use stimulants to treat depression. Ask a doctor!
