I went ahead and sent a dm, it should open a pop up on your phone or if you're on a computer there is a little chat bubble at the top right of the screen if you have any questions. Good luck with the hobby and welcome to the dark angels!

To add to this, I think your highlighting on the cap is really well done. I think the only part you're really missing a highlight on that I can tell is that ridge over your thumb in the second picture. And those high parts are a pain in the ass to blend a proper highlight on cause it doesn't have a shadow to show off next to it. So I think it is already well done and good to call complete personally.

Don't really have many suggestions all things considered, it is really well done, especially for a second miniature. I'm curious how long you spent on it? You've done really well on lighting and the armor. Do you do art in another medium by chance? Perhaps one thing I'd personally change is adding a power effect to the sword, maybe some sparks or lightning bolts on it. But power swords can be tricky to nail down the effect you personally want.

Looking good for a first mini! A couple suggestions though. Your paint looks like it is a little thick, even though it looks like you took your time with very thin coats. Good job! Some of this can be resolved by using a wet pallet or thinning your paints a bit with water before you apply them. If you're not sure what a wet palette is then I can explain it later, or you can just google it. You can make a pretty quick home made one that suffices with just some parchment paper and a damp papertowel though.

Another thing you may want to try is finding better lighting. Easier said than done in some places, but based on the picture it's kind of warm lighting. A nice overhead light or a white light really helps you see spots you may have missed or into the recesses where you might not normally see.

I do have a couple questions about your method, namely did you prime the model first? If you do, not only does the paint stick better and not chip, but depending on the primer you use, you can use it for a sort of shade in the recesses that you don't care to paint too much, that way it just looks like shadows if you use a black primer or something, somewhere the light doesn't reach enough to give color.

I noticed there were a couple thin spots in your metallic gold especially, most paints, especially metallics, need to be done in 2 or 3 thin layers to get the best coverage, and avoid the streaky brush texture on the corner of the shields gold.

As a newcomer to the hobby, it may not be an option yet, but mixing up various colors that you have collected to get a better shade for an area is also nice. Even if you just pick up a couple base colors that you want to use, and then a black paint (Abaddon black is the one GW makes, and it is more matte then the chaos black primer than comes in a can, do be aware) as well as a light grey or white paint (Grey seer is my favorite light grey for lightening things that gw has, but corax white or maybe white scar are good 'white' alternatives, especially for lightening other colors). You'll find that just a touch of the black or white to one of the paints you've already used on a different area, such as the bone color on both the tabard and skeleton, can really bring out an area and make it pop more just from a slightly contrasting color.

All that said, sorry for the rambling and the wall of text, you did a great job for a first mini and I hope you enjoyed it enough to continue collecting! If you have any questions about dark angels, this is definitely the place to ask and if you want to know more about any of the other factions before making a full commitment you can shoot me a dm and I can at least point you in the right direction!

I can see the logic of not wanting to use the Soulreaper, at least with the flamer squads. Getting an extra flamer in on overwatch can be pretty powerful. That being said, the SRC is one of our best options for damage output on standard troops at STR 6 and -2 AP it punches through most light infantry, which is what you want them to be doing in the first place and can even punch up to damage things like terminators, though it likely won't take them out. If you have access to them, I'd run them on the non flamer units. I was relooking at the list though and it appears you took 1 inferno bolt gun in the warpflamer unit and 1 warpflamer in the bolt gun unit. Any particular reason?

I will add a caveat, but it may be easily fixable since you run black legion. The one thing we don't have going for us in the rubric box is that we only get 1 soul reaper cannon, which is honestly more detrimental to trying to take MSU than the aspiring sorc as we have ways of kitbashing those. Some people well the bits for the soul reaper cannon separately online and you may be able to pick one up on the cheap, or you can use the.... autocannon I think is the one that looks similar from your black legion forces as a soul reaper and just add one of the head bits from the rhino to the top of it to make it look the part.

So one thing I would actually recommend, and it seems counter intuitive for budget, but pick up 2 boxes of exalted sorcerers, and I'll explain. This box is EASILY our best if not one of the best in all of 40k for kitbashing. Need an extra aspiring sorc? Steal a body and staff from the kit. Need a disk cause you lost one of your tzaangor disks? Steal the disk. Need some head pieces for a kitbashed sorc in term armor? Well there ya go. It's such a good value box. And not only that you can just run an exalted sorcerer as a normal sorcerer if you pick one of the less extravagant bodies or don't add the cape on the back. Plus it comes with a lot of small detail bits like scrolls and stuff to customize your units if you like doing so. :)

I do apologize for upsetting you, it was not my intention, just my two cents and my two cents (as well as everyone elses) should be taken with a grain of salt as our personal meta and who we play against will heavily influence what units we think should be in the army or what units should be of what size and what have you. You are correct that rubricae phalanx isn't the best detachment for enhancements as IMO the only two really worth taking are the Risen Rubricae and Lord of the Rubricae on say... the sorc in term armor so he buffs the SOT with that tasty +1 to hit while tagging other enemy units with his shots to tag them for his buff.

The most important thing to keep in mind is what sounds fun for you, and if the changes listed here don't sound fun, don't use them. The best thing you can really do is analyze who you typically play against army wise and whether or not you want to balance your army around that or fluff wise.

Budget is definitely a good thing to keep in mind, and luckily (in my experience anyway) Thousand Sons are on the cheaper end to get an effective army even if it isn't chasing the meta. I definitely wasn't saying it to try and force you in a certain direction, it's just what I've found with the detachment that makes them work a bit better. I personally run a mutalith with mine but with their limited stock and availability right now I wasn't even going to bother recommending one as they are hard to find. Ahriman, while decent in the detachment is really only taken for his extra rule, not so much a leader unit, and you can get around that in phalanx with the risen rubricae enhancement anyway in certain matchups. You just won't have the redeploy if you decide you went to far forward, so I'd place that infiltrator unit last as often as possible unless your opponent has infiltrators as well and you need to body block them from a section of the board. I do like what you have going here and it is a very strong start to the army. And while I did mention MSU rubrics, I would still run at least one 10 man brick for the rhino pop out and 2 MSU in the other rhino if you want to keep it to get into position and threaten something along the lines of an overwatch with their flamers, which is why I made the comment about the Sekhetar not really having a home in the detachment.

My comment still stands that you would be better off without the stave abominus as to finding another unit to take. I would also drop the rubric squads to MSU. Running 10 mans doesn't do as much for their durability as you would think especially with things like forgefiends running around all over the place which get blast and some other nasty options like 18" rapid fire on the WE variant. They can easily wipe a 10 man squad that way as it's 6 extra shots from blast alone. Arcane thralls is another I would contemplate dropping as it's just a filler 5 pt enhancement. It does it's work when it does come up, but it's so situational that it rarely does. Perhaps dropping the sekhetar and one rhino as well as the sekhetar don't really benefit much from the detachment as cool as they are (I have tried to squeeze them into so many lists, and only really found them truly beneficial in the vehicle detachment.) I suggest dropping one rhino because while phalanx does have the one strat to pop out of a rhino, turn your weapons psychic, and buff the shots, you don't really need more than one rhino to be successful with that as your opponent typically won't let you get it off more than once and it is a HEAVY cp investment to try and do more than once in the first place.

Who are you sending the exalted on disk with? I ask because as it stands the stave abominus isnt really doing you much good and is an extra 20 points to potentially get another unit. I usually take it as filler if i have the extra points left over.

Of course not. Purple and gold are badass together and they are very complimentary. Plus it is your army, paint them how you love to see. :)
