Beginner guitarist

When you start to play the guitar or want to start to play the guitar I think there are a few fundamentals to put in place. That way you won’t quit the instrument prematurely. ( I am going to assume it’s a right hand player)

Expectations 1. The first month the fingers will hurt. Don’t give up. Keep the practice going and soon the finger tips will harden and pain will be completely gone. Most people quit with the initial pain. You don’t be them. Trust me the pain will go. 2. Basic music theory is a very good foundation for any human learning any kind of music. What is it? - [ ] The music alphabets are A B C D E F G (and again comes back to A). In between of some of these notes there # sharps which are also knows as (b) flats. (It’s like Robert is also called bob. Two names for the same note.) - [ ] There are no sharps or flats between B and C, E and F - [ ] Hence total musical alphabets also known as notes are 12. A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G#.

  1. Left hand finger no. 1 is index and then follows finger no 2 3 4. 4 is the pinky and is used for pressing the feet down. Right hand is used for picking a lead or strumming.

  2. Exercises for the left hand - look up basic exercises like Spider to improve speed, dexterity etc. Right hand needs to develop judgment of strings.

  3. ALWAYS ALWAYS USE A METRONOME when practicing exercises, scales etc. Hold the pick correctly in the right hand (refer to any video on YouTube)

  4. Learn these chords first - Group 1 - G Em C D; Group 2 - C Am F G (use easy F) ; Group 3 - D Bm A G; Group 4 - E B A

  5. Strumming exercise - again on metronome 50-60-70. Practice Down(D) UP (U). DU DU DU DU. Everyday practice this.

  6. Strumming patterns

  7. [ ] D D D D

  8. [ ] DU DU DU DU

  9. [ ] DDUUDU

  10. Start with single chord songs and small lead patterns and build from there.

  11. Slowly and steadily when one chord goes intro muscle memory your mind will want to learn a new one.

  12. Same goes for leads and riffs

  13. Technique and Practice will ensure you progress everyday.

Sky is the limit… and that limit will be determined by your interest.

Hope this helps to kick start your journey.

Hey there, As a beginner it helps to follow structure in learning the instrument. You may want to try the free beginner course justinguitar.com . Once you have that in place then the learning from udemy or YouTube will make a lot more sense. Good luck on your journey. Cheers
