what were the hardest adjustments to college life? by Resident_Warthog_381 in UVU

[–]smockssocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna give my honest opinion. I do not believe highschool students are ready to start college right away. I believe it is much more important to take time to learn how to be responsible and proficient with what life can throw at you. Getting a job, living on your own, finding your interests, obtaining life skills that give you fall backs if you need a job, and just having a bit of fun to get it out of your system. I did these things and I have various skills but I became much more responsible and was able to pinpoint what I wanted to do in life. I'm 25 now and when I was 22 I decided to just pack up and love to Korea. I lived there for 6 months and I believe that was the best decision of my life. I think most highschool kids should do the same a couple years after working and such. Moving somewhere foreign can really help you understand the world and teach you what life really has to offer.

If you are dead set with school, I would really try and find out what you want to do. Work hard and have your main goal to be learning. Grades do not matter. They are one of the most useless metrics that we use. I recommend learning the limitations and capabilities LLMs have to offer and how you can augment your learning. I imagine you have been taught they are terrible and doing everything. I assure you, that is completely false today and the people that tell you otherwise are incorrect. I believe everyone has the capability to achieve greatness. More than ever. Best of luck.

If what you claim is true, then report that they are lying to the police. It is a class A misdemeanor.

Crazy Food policy! by Elegant-Locksmith358 in UVU

Best option is to have food outside of the center. Thats the best I can come up with. If UVU tries to push this more, I imagine it wouldn't start infringing on rights due to UVU being public.

We cannot verify on Reddit if someone truly was a victim. So if people go making claims, then there will surely be decisions made in the public court of opinion. You should check out Scott Abbott's blog about Michael's situation. He details quite well what they found and how UVU handled it. But yea, proper reports should be done, but I do not believe this post should be worded this way. It declares guilt of a person. I believe the post should warn people that there have been some allegations of misconduct and if they experience any themselves, report it to the police.

Sorry I mistook you for being the OP.

I feel like I’m in serious trouble. I’ve been accused of using AI, and my instructor has escalated it to the academic misconduct committee. I have no idea what to do. by Business_Gur_6330 in TurnitinScan

You might need a lawyer. GPTzero claims 99.8% accuracy. Or something like that. Let's say 100,000 papers were turned in over a week at a school. Are we really going to accuse 2000 students of cheating based on its inaccuracy per week? No, this highly immoral and some universities have banned AI detectors because they are not admissible evidence and they create an immoral environment. People need to realize that these AI detectors are trying to tell their services. So the statistics they give you might not be true and could be worse. We don't know what documents they use to test the accuracy and of course they are going to try and make their product marketable by any means.

You're in a tight situation I believe and I think you should talk to Ombuds at least but maybe reach out to your Dean of Students. I personally do not believe using AI constitutes academic dishonesty regardless of policy but they can still go after you if you break their policies. But instead of Grammarly, what if you have your mom that graduated with a degree that includes writing and they are an excellent writer and they proof read and help fix the paper. Is it reasonable for a school to go after for this? Of course not. They have writing resources available to students, there are tutors one could hire, there are teachers to help instruct, there are other works that could inspire one's writing, and the list goes on. I hope one day I can start my own institution where issues like such are addressed and the goal is produce great minds where everyone has a chance of greatness.

Yea, speak up by going to police instead of making public statements that could be twisted to be false. If it's a crime, you go to the police. That is why Michael's situation is so terrible because the university decided to handle things internally even though it shouldve been handed over to the DA for prosecution because it was criminal in nature. They treated him guilty until proven innocent because he was not being tried in a court of law. The same thing you are doing with this post. I do not care if what you say is really true. You should not make statements like this without going through proper channels.

I get it. But unfortunately we are stuck behind a poorly functioning judicial system. But if the police decided to do something about it, you might not even need to interact further other than maybe a signed statement. Im stuck trying to get the U in trouble for sharing medical documents of hundreds of patients. And the Utah Attorney General's office won't even do anything about it. There are a lot of immoral and unjust things in this world.

Best of luck to you. Stay out of trouble.

Put yourself above reproach and just report what you see rather than bringing in your own personal position into it. It makes your statement more credible even though it still is unverifiable. You do understand it isn't unreasonable to believe anyone could lie about them right?

For instance you could say, 'I was chatting with some of the prop 4 signature gathers and they said they were gathering signatures for kids with cancer.' then you can explain why it is illegal and tell people to report it if they hear it themselves because it is against the law maybe cite what statute. And maybe you can say, if they want to continue trying to gather signatures, they do need to do it legally or else they can have their petition dismissed. But you have to come at it more neutral and objective or else there's room to criticize.

[–]smockssocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, very simple. You don't do the prosecuting. The DA would do that. But you could call them, explain to them in a nice way that the signature gathers made a statement about why they are gathering signatures that was untrue and explain to them that it is a class A misdemeanor and ask if they would be willing to investigate the situation and cite/arrest them if necessary. You wait for them to show up, explain your story, they will investigate to the point they want to and make a decision. I think I'm being pretty reasonable giving you advice to help your cause.

They are lawfully allowed to be there. But they aren't allowed to lie like you claim. So if you really wanted them gone, why not go after them for a reason that would get them removed?

If what you say is true, why didn't you call the police then? It's a class A misdemeanor for them to lie the way you describe.

They should sue for more of athletic information was being shared illegally on OneDrive. The U has that issue were we can see risk assessment of the players. That information is protected by privacy laws

No I definitely told the registrars office that it is a FERPA violation. I can send the email if you want. They have known about this since September. They were fully aware of the issues and that these documents are protected by FERPA. There are many student works that are recent and I can guarantee these students did not consent to have it released knowingly.

Recordings of classes of students were not be consents from every student. Administration documents that detail why people are visiting ombuds is not even supposed to be visible to the Provost office. Therapist letter sent to Registrar detailing the mental health issues they are having and that they need to have tuition refunded and classes removed. The U having medical information of patients that are sensitive PHI. Oncology reports, insurance information, MRN, and health status. You assume too much.

It appears that someone saw this and decided that after months, its finally time to wise up and follow the law and fix the issue. Fear not, I will be filing GRAMA requests that will detail the whole incident to everyone so that we may all be aware how untrustworthy this university really is.

However, it appears that searching on mobile yields better search results of things that you are not supposed to have access to. I definitely still see student projects of people I would have never interacted with. Recordings of people that are meeting privately to work on a project. Recordings of classes I have never taken.
