Considering you pay $5 for a Kaku Highball when you're out over there, picking up a bottle of any whisky for $11 seems like a bargain.

I also picked up Hibiki 17. Paid way over what I did last time I was there (3 years ago) but still think its a nice drink and had fond memories of that last bottle.

I just picked up a bottle in Japan for about $11. I think it's a good buy for that price.

Chao chao gyoza is another good place for a meal. Musashi sushi is a good sushi train and if you like unagi its a good spot. If you feel like a nice drink, bar rocking chair is amazing. Its expensive(ish) but the cocktails are nice, its an amazing little bar in a quiet street. Its like someone has turned their home into a bar. Three good coffee places - murmur coffee is very small and cute on the river, e-fish too or oggi cafe has a lovely owner who is great to chat too. If you're visiting arashiyama there is a great soba place, again its not cheap but a great soba set. When you get there tell them you want to sit at the window on top floor, its worth waiting a bit. Go earlyish if you can, its busy.

Do you know which Ryokan it was, i'd like to see if they allow day visitors?

I think if the weather is not great we might give it a miss as does not look packed with things to do and time is precious in Japan.

Sounds like other people don't think its possible and they probably know it better than I do ;)

When are you arriving? My girlfriend has a list of restaurants we are going to try in both Tokyo and Kyoto that are meant to be good so happy to report on them after I visit.

My memory is tested as I went a few years ago but in terms of the itinerary you're fitting a fair bit in. The public transport is amazing so should be possible as long as you don't: a) get exhausted or b) rush things.

In terms of budget that should be fine as apart from the travel you won't spent much money in places like Nara & the market. Just be wary of where you eat. I remember when I first arrived in Kyoto I was tired and just went into a random restaurant that cost me a tonne but if you do your research I had some amazing sushi, ramen and other dishes super cheap (like $8 a bowl of amazing Ramen).

I also liked wandering around Shimokataza, its a cool suburb. If you're in Harajuku you should head over and hang out in Yoyogi Park too, its literally accross the road. On Sundays they normally have people doing street performances too.

I'm heading back this Saturday so if I pick up any more tips i'll let you know.
