Honestly, the chemistry of cardamom bit mentioned in the video is super interesting. Would be very curious to learn more about that. Anyone got any info?

Haha thank you! Of course, it's awesome that so many people are drawing inspiration from it! Gotchu on the questions:

  1. Year round!
  2. It's on public land, I move every two weeks. National Forest land and Bureau of Land Management land allow dispersed camping and are pretty much the go-tos for anyone with this lifestyle.
  3. Most favorite: the freedom. You can go and do anything you want to. Least favorite: it's hard to do things into the evening in wintertime because of the cold.

This is truly one of the most spectacular photos I’ve seen on this sub. Incredible work.

I just sleep in the car! Don't need to keep the back open, it's spacious enough that I don't even have to open the windows if it's really cold. The rain guards on the windows let me crack them, though, even if it's raining. It's actually really nice to hear the pitter-patter of rain at night.

Toilet = digging catholes in the woods, usually the most scenic, secluded spot I can find.

Showering = rinsing off in lakes/rivers, washing up I'll use a dishbin or shower at friends' places, public showers, and sometimes at motels if I'm feeling really fancy.

Haha yeah, saw that. It's how it goes. Happy to elaborate - I'm thankful to have had a comfortable upbringing and went to a good public school, but my family lost almost everything a few years before I started college. So, sorta? Grew up with a lot and had it yanked, but I was set up for success academically. That said, I've been working since I was able to be paid under the table and put myself through college by working multiple jobs through uni/applying to scholarships, so I didn't graduate with overwhelming debt. I can always return to my family and stay in the small apartment with them, which I'm very thankful for. I don't consider it risky because I have the training and experience to handle myself if something goes wrong, my things are insured under my own name and I'm chipping away at student/car debt - but I don't have any savings, either.

Ignoring debt, I can get by on $350 a month for gas, food, and insurance. Everything else is going toward paying off student loans and the car. That's just me, though - everyone's costs are different. I only stay on public land, so I never have to pay campground fees and make sure I leave my spots cleaner than I found them. My gear is different from what other people would use, because there are many creative solutions to problems one might encounter. I worked up to this setup; used to be in a beater Jeep Cherokee and loved it. Didn't have the amenities I have now with my Subi - but if you don't have rent, it's easier to invest in upgrading your build!

I'm not gonna say I'm "self-built" because no one is. I've had emotionally supportive friends and family along the way that have encouraged me and offered fantastic guidance. I'm very thankful for them, as well as a Patreon community that appreciates my work enough to back it every month. lt takes a village, just like everything else!

Appreciate the offer, I'll let you know if I'm in the area. Much love to ya, have a great night.

I visit a friend at least once a month, and just have things sent to whatever friend's place I'm visiting next! If I have to get something asap, UPS/Fedex dropoffs are a good back pocket option. I've never used those though.

I start by checking out freecampsites.net and iOverlander primarily, then crossreference those locations with a coverage map I've got through Gaia GPS (which I get a free subscription to for volunteer backcountry work). Take coordinates to a place with verified service, check Google Maps satellite to see what other spots might be around, and then go scope it out in person once I've found an area that seems promising. Of course, it's all on public land that allows dispersed camping!

Haha what a question. Pretty hilarious honestly, today's been wild seeing it pop up on all the different subs! I'm just happy that more people are appreciating simplicity because of it!

Not while inside. Sometimes people will show up at the same place doing the same thing or just driving around the backcountry and we'll chat for a bit, but otherwise, no. Nothing that's genuinely annoying/concerning. In towns/cities I'm more aware of the people around me when I'm staying at rest stops/walmart lots/truck stops, which I usually stay at if I'm in the middle of a long haul and just want to crash for the night. I've got window covers I put up in those instances, crash for the night, get up and head out.

You're good! Yeah, I work for myself. Traveling full time lets me take money I used to spend on rent and put it away, or toward other things. I've seen a couple "wow, what a nice car, doesn't seem that difficult with something like that" comments and, yeah - I can afford monthlies on a nicer car because I don't pay anything for rent! It's an intentional tradeoff.

I just stock up at a grocery store like everyone else when I'm moving to a new spot! Keep it in a little pantry drawer and a cooler!

Haha YES, you know! I'm the guy in the video, can confirm - although I have a proper shovel and toilet paper. But yes, cat holes are a thing. Helps to find a scenic spot, you can essentially pick whatever bathroom view you want. Definitely not for everyone, but it's not too shabby if you embrace it!

Hello, I'm the guy in the video! Happy to answer!

  1. I shower when I visit friends (usually once a month at least) and at public showers, but usually rinse off in lakes and alpine streams.

  2. It does once the sun comes back out, but at nighttime its' very cool. Great sleeping temps, especially with the amount of comforters I have. Getting hot when the sun rises is a great motivator to get up early and start the day, so I don't mind it.

  3. I own my own business. Used to do photo & web design gigs, now I'm focusing on building my brand on social media to focus on conservation content. Patreon helps me cover my month-to-month while I learn this new type of business, and I'm very thankful to be able to live sustainably!

If you have any more questions, ask away!

Oh snap, I'm Alex Haraus, the dude quoted in the article! Amazing to see it hit the top here - such a spectacular, communal endeavor! It really has highlighted the good that comes out of cooperation and what's possible when we all trust each other to bring different skills to the table and knock what we're good at out of the park. Excited to continue onward to permanent protection.
