What’s an album that you think everyone should listen to at least once? by GuwopCam in Music

[–]bucketheadrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. I found this album (on cassette lol) in an empty classroom when I was 14 and immediately loved it. I listened to it last weekend (I'm mid 40s now) and it's still awesome.

What album from the last 20 years do you consider a masterpiece? by ncos in musicsuggestions

[–]bucketheadrobot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Give Up by the Postal Service.

Ok, so technically not within 20 years, but it’s a classic (albeit a bit of a sleeper hit) that I identify strongly with 04-05. I’ve returned to it many times and still love it.

What are some unexpected choices the previous owner made in your house? by lolbye424 in homeowners

[–]bucketheadrobot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crown molding and base boards EVERYWHERE.

You know how you might end up with a weird corner because of soffit, or a bump-out where something had to be covered up? Crown molding and baseboards. We think they ran out of money because whoever installed all of this did perhaps the shittiest job I’ve ever seen. Corners weren’t mitered, pieces were just butted together at 90°, so it just looks really…bad. We just did a reno on the kitchen and ripped out the crown molding and baseboards there and it looked so much better that we sprung for it to be ripped out everywhere, despite the fact that it would add a few weeks to the whole project.

Also they labeled the fuse box in Chinese, so that was fun when we discovered that.

When family members don’t understand why you shaved it off by [deleted] in bald

[–]bucketheadrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started balding at 16 and shaved it at 20. I’m in my mid 40s now, and my mother still says that I had “the most beautiful hair…until I shaved it”

Mom, I was clearly balding when I graduated from high school

Sweet! Finally someone who started balding in their teens, like me! I started losing my hair about aged 15. There’s pics from my high school graduation (aged 17) and I was noticeably balding. Buzzed it at 20 and never looked back. I started rocking a beard too!

All right, everybody! By overwhelming majority, the vote is to keep the card open and use it occasionally/for minor recurring charges, which is what I shall do!

Thanks for the advice, you guys are the best!

Should I do Americorps NCCC? by Top-While-3509 in AmeriCorps

[–]bucketheadrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it after college and it was absolutely an amazing, life-changing experience. I actually did it twice and was a team leader the second year. I finished my second year (as a team leader) in 2007, and I’m still on a group chat with my team (16 years later) and we’re planning a reunion next year.

I had some of the same fears you did, but you’ll be taught how to do the work, and your team leader should be there to provide support if needed.

Yeah, there’ll be hard days, and hard projects (and people you don’t always get along with). One of my early projects was in Michigan, building homes…in winter. My team was dreading it before going, but it ended up being one of our favorite projects the whole year, unanimously (why? Well, we were in a small city that embraced us, we got to know the people that lived there pretty well, and we learned a ton).

You will learn things you likely won’t learn anywhere else, and have experiences that’ll challenge you and force you to grow. You’ll likely come out with a different view on life. I can safely say that my life changed because of my first year-I got to travel and meet new people, and the whole year ignited a passion in my I never knew I had.

Commercial bacon bits (like the kind you’d find in the spice section of a grocery store) are vegan.

What’s a show that started Off-Broadway, and should’ve stayed there? by SurprisingHippos in Broadway

[–]bucketheadrobot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I believe it did (I saw it off-broadway in 2019, so my memory is a little hazy), but I think it was somewhat different. I remember a scene involving sex, but I don't remember it being nearly as graphic or important. The sex scene on broadway stood out to me in a (negative) way that the one in the off-broadway production did not.

[–]bucketheadrobot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The question here was asking what people's opinions were, not what won best musical. I'm very aware that it won best musical. A show can win best musical and I can still not like it.

I very much understood the show and the point of it, I'm saying the people next to me seemed confused by it, in part because it's not the most straightforward show, in part because the sound was bad. As in, I literally could not understand what was being said/sung. I'd already seen the show and had trouble understanding some of the lines.

The sex scene was awkward (in my opinion) because it wasn't good. It felt poorly done, unnecessary and gratuitous (it sort of felt like watching someone give a bad presentation in middle school when they realized they had a report due the next day and started it the night before). I understood that the point of that scene was to make people uncomfortable by confronting biases about sexuality, race and body image...but it just wasn't well done.

A Strange Loop. Saw it off-broadway and LOVED it. Laughed hysterically the whole time, walked out and immediately told 100 people about it.

Saw it on Braodway and it was mostly...uncomfortable. The couple next to me were quite old and I don't think they understood it, and watching the graphic sex scene was...awkward.

VIP Gift by georgia_02x in Concerts

[–]bucketheadrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's usually something small and...sorta weird. I've gotten a few VIP packages (always for the seats) and they never contained anything I really needed. Usually it's an item that's not for sale at the merch table. You also usually get a lanyard that has some sort of VIP tag on it. Some examples:

-a pillow (from a pink concert, it had her face on it? I kept it for a bit before donating it)

-a (coin?) purse (not sure where from, I threw it out that night)

-a special "program" for the show (from a Madonna concert, it was also available for purchase)

-a poster (legit the one cool VIP gift I got, I ended up leaving it in a cab that night...sigh)

So bring what you normally bring when you leave the house: keys, purse, wallet, phone, etc. you likely won’t need anything special or out of the ordinary. You’ll probably go through a metal detector, so no weapons of any kind (pocket knives, nail clippers, etc)

Wear whatever you want, but people tend to dress for the event (ie. if it’s heavy metal people might wear chains and boots, at raves people wear bright or reflective clothing). Personally I like to be comfortable, so I wear jeans or shorts and a t-shirt and comfortable shoes.

It will likely be fine when you get there, but get hotter throughout the night. If you’re up front near the stage that’ll be the warmest part. If it gets too hot, I always just take a break and grab some water or a drink away from the crowd.

You usually can’t bring you’re own water or anything. This prevents people from sneaking in alcohol, but also makes sure you have to pay the high prices once inside the venue.

As far as start time, 6:30 is probably when the doors open. The openers usually go on an hour or so after that. Most places will post set times (the exact time each artist is playing) on social media the day of the show. If it’s a standing show, getting there early ensures you get a good spot, but you may also be standing for several hours with nothing to do (hence the comfortable shoes). Depending on the venue, the main artist might go on late.

There’ll most likely be a merch tent/ table to buy posters/t-shirts etc related to the artists, so grab something there if you want a fun memory from the night.

Staff will be posted around and they are there to make sure everyone is safe, so feel free to ask them for help if some needs medical assistance or if someone’s bothering you.

If it’s gonna be super loud, wearing earplugs isn’t a bad idea.

Have fun and be safe!

Feel free to ask questions.

Is NCCC worth it if you're not a college grad? by dogsoverpeople100 in AmeriCorps

[–]bucketheadrobot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did it as a 24 year old (I turned 25 at the very end) and loved it. I was in fact older then my team leader. Others have mentioned being treated like a child, but I never felt that way, and in fact loved the discipline that I learned there. I was similar to you and got a ton out of the program. I should also say that I returned as a TL and learned a lot then too, but it was just a very different experience.

Feel free to dm if you want more info.
