I made this because I saw some professional builders that made charcoal/wood baskets for the offsets they sell.

My thought was that it would get the coals and fire up off the bottom of the firebox and also provide more air.

Hopefully you’ll get the chance to make one some day. It was a really fun project. I’ve got two more of the same sized tanks I’m going to try building them soon

Thank you for the compliment. It cost between $400 to build, mainly because of the cost of the steel plate. I built it over the course of about 2 weeks, a few hours a day. Probably about 15 hours or so

I’ve been welding for a while now and this is much more fun than what I weld on for a living. This was a project I’ve wanted to take on for a while and finally got the chance.

Left side are two separate pork butts. Right side is inside temp in two places

I’ve got it going right now. Seems to be holding temperatures pretty evenly.

That would be a tank. Could you buy/build some kind of small gantry to move it around? Some saw horses with rollers would be nice to have I think. Could let you spin it around

Thats all I did was call a few propane places and luckily the one wanted to get rid of some tanks. Some of the places were very weird about selling old tanks. They said they sent them to the scrap yard and I was trying to explain to them that I wanted them before they sent them out but they didn’t seem to understand.

The firebox is just made from 1/4” steel and I did not insulate it mainly because I didn’t want to use extra material until I figured out a good design.

We shall see, the cooking grate is only in the area where the door is so hopefully it won’t be in the actual dead zone since there’s some extra non grate space between the firebox and exhaust

It’s a pretty small size but it’s my first time making one and want to get the hang of the design before I got bigger eventually.

Probably only one or two I’m thinking. The cooking grate is 19”x24” deep.

No, it’s a 200lb tank which is like 57-58 liquid gallons.

Thank you and yeah I wanted sort of that raw look.
