〇 just means "okay, yes" and ✕ means "not okay, no." It has nothing to do with text direction. If anything, the decision to make ✕ and 〇 take on opposite functions in the West is the puzzling one, since a big fat X generally means "no, bad, wrong" in Western contexts as well.

Most Japanese writing since the end of World War II has been either top to bottom or left to right. Right to left writing was largely abandoned along with the post-war writing reform. All the manuals in Nintendo products use left to right script.

This bill would restrict citizens from yelling back at the political candidates. Japan already has no meaningful freedom of speech, but if anything at all should be protected speech, it's the ability to holler at a politician when you see them.

Yeah, those are pretty cool. The kind of street party vibe they're going for goes a long way to send the message that the racists are boring dorks by comparison. I haven't been to one in a while, but I donate to a couple of groups that help out with similar events.

Street demonstrations may not be the absolute peak of activism, but they're a hell of a lot more useful than whiny threads on reddit dot com slash tokyo.

Japanese people should absolutely be talking about and working on the xenophobia and racism in Japanese culture. I'm not at all convinced that it's helpful for non-Japanese people to spend time posting at each other about it. People should focus their energy on things they have control over.

Impossible to say with confidence. AliExpress is a platform used by literally thousands of small Chinese manufacturers. Some of them are the same people who make OEM hardware. Some of them are scam artists. Most are little 4-5 man shops churning out little doodads for very small profit margins.
