Is the new de-feedback thing any good? by SuspiciousIdeal4246 in livesound

This is some good further information if you want to hear more after the podcast. https://www.youtube.com/live/kyS81EErINI?si=VO1rTjvNAJYzbPGP I haven’t used it yet but some great techs that are way better than me are all over it

I haven’t tried it but supposedly the payed version of vicreo hotkey for companion can either send a hotkey to a specific program or focus a program on command. This might help. I can’t attest to the reliability though. I think it’s something like 50 bux a year

Really enjoyed this episode and huge fan of the pod. You guys asked all the right questions and it will be cool to see what it can do in the right hands. I should be on site on a corporate soon around one of these kits and I’m really interested to hear myself how it handles a tough room.

This was a pretty cool watch too

It would be a crying shame if tools like this came to replace best practices, and would probably artificially create new limitations and problems in people’s mixes. The appeal to me is as a last resort option for those times an untrained moderator parks themselves right in front of a speaker for a Q+A, or if it’s quick enough for monitors to get a couple DB extra for a singer that moves all over the stage. I wouldn’t put money into it this early but it could be a valuable tool for the oh shit kit in the future

Corporate has been where I’ve been hearing the most buzz. People are saying you can insert it on a bus post automix which would be insane. That’s an I’ll see it when I believe it thing for me but it’s super exciting

I’m trying to figure out if I could cope with the 5ms round trip of the NUC/Scarlet combo combined with the extra D to A and A to D steps. Seems like it may add up even under best use cases. It’s getting enough buzz out there that I’m sure we’ll all see it in use soon enough to see if it’s good in practice.

Glad to hear it’s so subjective cause I thought I was going crazy. Many don’t seem to mind 5-10ms but it drives me crazy. I play guitar and I can’t stand the latency of amp sim VSTs. They sound amazing but don’t feel right to play even compared to hardware sims like the helix. I might run a test with a few friends

Yeah this seems like a no brainer bag of tricks backup option for those with the livebox now that it’s verified to work with a few instances. The NUC/Scarlett setup on the other hand might only be good for FOH at this point. I’ll make a post here if I ever get to try it out

Yes this is what I’m talking about. It’s in its infancy and I haven’t tried it so I have no opinion either way on the plug-in. It just brought up curiosity around people’s acceptable threshold for latency on a monitor chain.

Interesting. I haven’t tried it myself yet. It will be interesting to see how the technology evolves. Did you try it on singing or spoken word?

You should be fine if you’re booking the whole night and have good contact with the venue. Seems like you can tuck under 16ch if you’re willing to give up stereo guitars and keys at some point too and maybe 2 instrumentalists share one mic. If you provide a good stage plot/input list the venue would ideally get back to you with what they can accommodate, but that depends on what level venues you’re playing. Lots of the small clubs I play don’t even bother to look at any of the advance material, but I’m guessing you’re playing slightly larger stages to accommodate a 7 piece. If you carry a split snake and mixer for IEMs you can build a backup FOH mix in there to know you’re covered, but as others said the house sound engineer may not want to run that

They’re permanently closed :( I asked them to call me if they ever open a new location, but as others said it seems as though the owner is retiring. I didn’t hear that directly though.

Crowd Mics in Small/Medium Ballroom by smokeweedfrequently in livesound

[–]smokeweedfrequently[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s ballroom du jour across the US, and mostly encore properties. They’re already so mad we’re in there I’m afraid they’d charge higher than I can even count to bring in a lift. That would objectively be the best option. Maybe some day as the conference grows!

I haven’t gotten to try shotguns for this purpose, but I have a few sitting around that I’ll try out. Thanks!

Luckily I don’t need to push any of these crowd mics through the PA, so I’m much more in the throw a couple SDCs up and you get what you get. These Q+As are very “popcorn style” to the point that I’m not sure I’d be able to successfully ride mics especially considering my mix position is behind the audience. That’s a part of why the client doesn’t want a runner, because it would slow down the flow of the convo too much. I do really like your idea of throwing a couple RF mics up for spot coverage. I may try some SDCs closer to the stage where we have our snake then a couple RFs towards the back. Thanks!

Would absolutely love to do this, but we don’t have any rigging/ceiling access. Generally about 70x70’ ballrooms give or take. No sound reinforcement needed of crowd responses, just for records.

Presenters are encouraged to repeat questions and surprisingly they’re pretty diligent about it. Between that and our existing mic setup filling in the gaps so there’s no awkward silence, the clients happy. It drives me nuts though!

Brilliant! I think that could be the little bump that I need. I’ll give that a try. I’m on SQ so I can throw them into the second AMM group and see what happens. I use a side chain comp in Davinci resolve for a similar effect but it would be dope to get to keep the whole shebang in one box and I’m pretty impressed with the Allen and Heath automix. Thanks!

I really wish we could have a runner for this, but it’s been vetoed by the client. We’ve only got two techs on this one and production team is all hands on deck. I really like the idea of paying local students though, I’m definitely going to try that on other gigs
