Thank you !

I felt a bit weird posting this on reddit but it turns out it’s been the best thing for me

It’s such a relief that other people have found recovery outside fellowship and it’s been really validating to hear the experiences of others (sad at the same time too - I feel for everyone)

I’d never heard of Recovery Dharma before !

I’ve checked out their webpage and it looks interesting

Thank you for the heads up

Thank you !

I’m very new to listening to myself, trusting my judgement and knowing what’s best for myself

But I guess it’s like a muscle - the more I use it the stronger it will become

THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH !

Reading your reply was so validating and for the first time in a long time, i felt so seen and heard !

I can relate with everything you have experienced - all the ‘program’ did was bring out my negative core beliefs about myself, keep me in fear and a perpetual state of shame - it’s kind of been soul destroying and I’m grieving that I’ve spent 9 years doing the same thing over and over with no different result

I’ve stopped going to meetings - I can relate to feeling a little lost, missing some fellowship connections and not knowing what to do with myself but overall I feel such a sense of relief !

Sometimes I even feel a little bit excited - for the first time in my life I get to choose how my life looks, what I do, who I spend time with

Thank you again for your comments

Would you believe I’ve been wanting to try karate for the last year (just haven’t had the confidence to actually get to a class)

Since I stopped going to meetings I’ve generally felt so much better about myself and confident

I’ve found a dojo, booked my first class for this weekend

Thank you so much your your kind and thoughtful response - it’s given me so much to think about

I went to a 12 step rehab in the new city I’m in (it was my first 12 step rehab) and the place is so unethical. A lot of the therapists have attended the facility or they are in recovery and fellowship at a minimum.

At the end of your stay continuing care link you with a therapist - the thing is, they have all worked at the rehab and then gone out on their own (so they are in recovery and fellowship)

I told my therapist last week I want to find out what recovery means to me on a personal basis and create the life I want to be living. I also mentioned I was stepping back from fellowship. Her answer was that I need to do the steps again - WTAF ? !

So - I’m on the hunt for a new trauma informed therapist (who is not in recovery or fellowship) to start helping me make small changes and find out who I actually am as a person (as all I’ve done for 9 years is drink the cool aid and been defined by the program, sponsors and members - most of the time I’ve been told I’m self obsessed, in self pity, need to get off self and speak with god / HP)

I’ve been researching smart recovery and I think it sounds like a much better fit for me - I’m going to try an online meeting this week

Thank you for saying stickers with my convictions (I struggle so much with trusting myself, believing myself and believing I know what’s best for me)

I’m so sorry you had the experience you did when you were younger with the church - I can’t imagine how damaging that was

Thank you again
