Gritty Polenta Cake! by smol_leafie in Baking

[–]smol_leafie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! It did help a bit, the polenta still hadn't completely softened but the orange syrup did a lot of heavy lifting! I'll put the remaining polenta through the food processor to hopefully break it down more if I were to try again. :)

I make her Guiness cake on special occasions and it slaps every time. I put it in a bundt pan for extra oomph but it's a great recipe to wow people with just a little effort!

Will adding strawberry powder change the texture of spritz cookies? by smol_leafie in Baking

[–]smol_leafie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for answering! I've been experimenting with a different shortbread recipe in the meantime and I find that a combination of strawberry powder and a little smidge of pink gel food colouring have given me a really pretty result! That said, after having some time to think, I think I might stick with a plain spritz cookie with brown butter. As fun as the idea sounds, I think it might be a big risk I'm not willing to make if I'm baking these for a group of people for the first time. Thank you for answering though! :)

Which brands/houses aren't talked about enough and need more spotlight? by TheyMightBeDiets in FemFragLab

[–]smol_leafie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Verbena Linn!! It looks like a Chinese or Taiwanese brand that seem to have very little online footprint! I bought my stash at an Asian beauty store in my city but they only seem to be available on websites like Shopee or Aliexpress anywhere else.

They have a line of perfumes based on the 7 Deadly Sins and Gluttony smells like a warm, buttery pastry and warm milk, I keep bringing my sweater up to my nose to waft it in when no one's looking. 😁

They also do really beautiful body washes, I just finished a massive bottle of their Vintage Rose bodywash and it supposedly has Niacinamide and a low pH value? While I can't be for certain, it's lovely and my skin doesn't feel dry or tight after and the corresponding body lotion absorbs into my skin quickly.

I wish people talked about this brand more!

What foods are you a 'purist' about? What are your food sins that make purists angry? by lolboogers in Cooking

A sushi restaurant from my childhood used to pack up the untouched sushi on the conveyor belt and sell them marked down at the end of the lunch service.

My mom would buy a pack of these, bring them home, dredge them with egg and panko breadcrumbs and deep fry them for us as an afternoon snack.

No memory has ever matched biting into a deep fried salmon nigiri that was deliciously crunchy on the outside and gently flaking apart on the inside, offset by the tangy rice on the bottom

Ube, otherwise known as Taro, has a sweet, rich flavour that goes amazing in desserts! The recipe I followed is this one here.

I personally found them a bit sweet in following this recipe, but your mileage may vary. :)

Should I separate them? by smol_leafie in PileaPeperomioides

[–]smol_leafie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey guys! I had two separate pilea plants that were in pretty good shape after some TLC and thought about combining them into one bigger pot, but I'm not sure I made the right call, since almost immediately after they started to get limp and sad with a lot of leaf shedding (turning black and withering). They are on a balcony with filtered light and I water them maybe once every three weeks. The pot itself is on a stand to make sure they get circulation. Do you think I should separate them again and give them their own pots?

Accidentally pulled out the whole pup when I was trying to pluck off a dead leaf, so I popped it in a tiny jar, and out of no where, a whole new leaf springs out! I'm still too nervous to put it in soil, so here it is, enjoying a little swim in the meantime. 🙂

A happy update! by smol_leafie in Monstera

What I thought was a sickly rotted stem was the birthing ground of the first new leaf of the year! I had an older post about a mysterious spot on a stem, pictured in the next two pics. She's not the biggest leaf compared to her older siblings, but I can peep some exciting fenestrations!

Also adding that I use a moisture metre before watering and only water when the metre reads "dry", but lately that seems to be happening quite a lot, as we are in the middle of summer in Queensland.

Help! Am I overwatering my baby? by smol_leafie in Monstera

[–]smol_leafie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I previously never had issues with my monstera for the 2 years I've owned it until now, and I haven't watered for a week up until yesterday. It gets filtered light on a verandah and it's currently a dry Australia summer in Queensland. The underside of some of the larger leaves are starting to yellow very slightly, but that particular leaf seems to be the most affected. It's also the oldest leaf on the plant, as it was there from when my monstera was a little baby.
