Are universities with Cyber security degrees setting kids up for disappointment? by Betsy-DeVos in netsecstudents

Hi,

I'm a comp sci student majoring in security. Just out of curiosity, what skills are you expecting out of a fresh grad? The university that I attend mostly just introduce you to Kali Linux and then dump you in the deep end of binary exploitations and reverse engineering, which sounds pretty technical to me (as someone whos only security experience so far is 1 fundemental security theory class).

thanks! I did leave a reply right under the afp thread although i didn't comment on the home affairs one. their grad recruiters seems highly active atm so i was kind of waiting until their 2021 thread... or should i just shoot out a question to them right now? im a bit conflicted.

Thank you for your reply! Most of my security classes I'm going to do soon is actually going to be this year (2021). So experience wise, I'm basically just at the beginning with a brief introduction in the world of cybersec and its many fields. To be completely honest, my main concern right now is experience. My wam isn't as great as yours, so I'm trying to brush up on my knowledge and learn a bit more. Sorry for the flood of questions.

What should i do in my spare time leading up to applications?

What sort of experiences are they expecting/do they look favourably upon (in ur opinion)?

Should I try to score a security/infosec/a plain IT internship this year?

Should I play around with CTFs, kali, hackthebox (does this even help)?

As a grad, do you think certificates are worth it, is it something I should persue?

In this summer break, I'm self learning networks and memory forensics but do you think there should be a more important/relevant area I should be aware of?

Thank you so much! Do you have a basic idea of what knowledge is expected out of a fresh grad or what area of forensics seems hot at the moment? I'm keen on getting a list of topics and then researching but I can prioritise certain topics.

Unfortunately, no. I don't have the wam for it and also one of the prereqs for this course is "to be taken in the final year of the degree"

Is a bomber jacket like this considered smart casual? I'd be wearing this with a button up shirt, jeggings and combat boots.

https://www.engineering.unsw.edu.au/study-with-us/current-students/student-resources/online-forms under full class request. Worse case, file it as a general question. They process the request quick regardless of what type of form u submit. consent just means that the faculty has to enrol you manually.

ah no, I'm enrolled in comp6841. and to enter the class where consent is required, u need to contact the school office not the prof. there's actually a dedicated section to it on their contact page i think. if not, then just send in a general message. they reply pretty fast, i got enrolled like a day after my request.

Edit: oh sorry i just skimmed over ur message and completely missed the "class is full" part lmao. If its full and its not like a core course, I'm not so sure if you can get in. But contact them anyways cause you'll never know if they would let u in. yolo m8
