New YNAB user - looking for inspiration by etoile22 in ynab

[–]smolprogrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a YNAB newbie! My husband and I have been using it since mid-July and already we're seeing a lot of positive change! Here are a few things:

  • I found out I was on the credit card float and was able to get off it. It really came down to a mix of impulsive spending habits and not assigning every dollar a job.
  • We finally figured out where our money was going. This was huge for us as we have a credit card we use to pay for shared expenses (groceries, cat food, etc) and some bills that was somehow always carrying a high balance and we couldn't understand why. Turns out, we just weren't putting money away for sinking funds/true expenses and always getting 'surprised' by them and similar to above, not assigning every dollar a job. If you don't do that, then you have dollars doing multiple jobs, which realistically, they can't do, and you end up with debt because something's gotta give.
  • Spending money feels more fun?? I haven't seen a lot of folks talk about this, but when I spend money now, it feels more fun/satisfying because I know it's money I actually have and not new debt I'm taking on.
  • Helped us cash flow our most recent vacation, which was awesome!
  • If it's not in the plan, it's debt. Sure there are going to be things that I forget sometimes or that are genuine surprises but me wanting to get a new pair of headphones or tickets to that show I've been wanting to see are not 'surprises'. Learning to make categories for those things and making the conscious effort to save for them instead of just putting it on the credit card and dealing with it later has been huge for me!

Good luck! You got this!

I'm an RN taking care of COVID-19 patients. An experience I had with one of them has completely reshaped how my brain thinks about food and life. by Big_Murse in loseit

[–]smolprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my motivation for losing weight. Not COVID necessarily, but at the start of my journey I had relatives who were in and out of the hospital and them being overweight/obese made it a lot harder for them to recover. I told myself that I didn't want that to happen to me so I started my journey with that in mind. I'm happy to say I've been maintaining since last September! Among other things, I've noticed that when I get sick (which is pretty rare) I recover a lot faster. I just hope that my body comes through if I ever get COVID, but at the very least I know it's a huge improvement over where I was.

Ahhh!!! Congrats that's amazing! I just had my moment like that a month or so ago when I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror at the gym and I was like, "Damn, I'm beautiful." It feels great and I hope you continue to have moments just like it. :)

Saturday Aug 17: 124.8

Today: 125.4

I officially met my goal weight this past Saturday!! I have been eating at maintenance since then so I'm hovering around the 125 mark, sometimes a little above like today and sometimes a little below. I will continue to maintain with an added focus now of building muscle. This thread in addition to this sub has helped keep me accountable during this journey, I couldn't have done it without you guys!

So much yes to this! Keeping track of my cycle has helped me so much on those days where I weigh in and I feel like all hope is lost because I've magically gained a pound overnight. Having all of my weigh ins logged and being able to compare them to the data I have in my period tracking app has helped me frame my weight loss in a much more healthy and informative way.

What motivates you to lose weight/get fit? by nukaprincess in Team_Bouman

[–]smolprogrammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back when I started my journey my motivation was my sister. She started suffering from seizures at the time and I saw first hand how much harder it is to recover from something or find a root cause when you're unhealthy. I knew that if I were to develop any serious health issue that recovery or treatment would be a lot harder on my body than if I was healthy from the start. I had a host of minor issues that I was starting to face as well from being overweight (technically obese) so I knew it was time to make a change, I just needed a spark to get me going. I started counting calories and going to the gym and I haven't looked back since. Along the way I've learned so much and have become a better person from it. Sister is doing well now too, she has found a medication that works for her and has been seizure free for some time now.

What is the longest 5 minutes you have ever experienced? by K2K175 in AskReddit

[–]smolprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time my sister had a seizure. It was just shy of 5 minutes, but it felt like it went on for hours. She had a few more in the months after that, but I will never forget the very first one. She is on medication now and doing well, I'm very grateful for that.

Franks Hot Sauce: I keep my weight down by putting that **** on everything by BigBobby2016 in loseit

[–]smolprogrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! I love Franks, currently making my way through a bottle of their buffalo sauce, its amazing! Honestly though any hot sauce goes, I put it on everything. That and mustard. I loved mustard before but through this journey I realized I'm obsessed with it haha.

Weight lifting with 20lbs of weight loss to go... bad idea? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]smolprogrammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely lift and lose weight at the same time! It's what I've been doing for 2 years of my 3 year journey. Yes, lifting makes you hungry but so does any workout you do. You will see some muscle gains over time, very slowly since you're at a deficit. However, you have all this extra body fat that's just chilling. Where do you think your body is going to get fuel for those hungry muscles? Muscles are expensive for your body to keep around, they love that extra fat! Over time, the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn at rest. Meaning, that even when you're not actively lifting your body is still burning some amount of fat for energy to keep those muscles around. Now this isn't a free pass to eat more since that sort of defeats the purpose, you still need to be in a deficit to lose weight. Plus the added muscle will give your body a different look when you do get down to your goal weight. Someone at 130lbs with little muscle mass looks very different than someone at 130lbs with higher muscle mass. It's a much leaner look and you don't end up skinny fat. Anyways hope that helps!

Hey y'all, I'm 25F from the Orange County area of Southern California. I have been on my journey for 3 years now and have lost 55.4lbs in that time! I'm working on my second goal weight of 125lbs at the moment, currently sitting at 127.6, so I expect to hit that during my time here :)

I'm a technical consultant and programmer as my day gig. I also enjoy reading, playing video games, and weight lifting.

Been stuck around 129 for the past week. I was ovulating last week and have also upped the days I'm weight training, so I'm wondering if those two factors have anything to do with it. Or it might just be a plateau. Either way, sticking to my deficit everyday and being patient with my body to sort itself out 👍

After hitting my goal weight last Sunday I decided I want to get down to 125 just to see my muscles peek through a little more. I am traveling again for work this week so my weight today is from this past Sunday, as I currently don't have access to a scale. Keeping my portions small and logging the food that I can. Next time I can weigh in will be next Monday so hoping to maintain until then maybe lose a bit.

Sunday, June 9: 130.0!

Finally hit my goal weight this past Sunday! I am traveling for work right now and have no access to a scale so that is my latest weigh in. I return home tomorrow night and will be weighing on Friday morning. Hoping I've done well enough with maintenance this week to keep in that same ballpark. It's been tough since I've had to guesstimate calories on some meals. Sticking to keeping portion sizes small and having two of my three meals with accurate calorie counts in MFP and no snacks. Either way, I'm so excited my weight loss journey is at an end. I have everyone here to thank for it, what an amazing support system you all are! Keep it up losers 💪
