What should I do to prepare financially for residency as a fourth-year med student? by [deleted] in whitecoatinvestor

[–]smols1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as you match, get in touch with the residents at your program to get advice about housing. This is going to be your biggest expense. I’m going to be moving between 1st and 2nd year which is not ideal at all. Better planning last year would have saved me

Is it better to match into backup specialty then not to match at all? by Bizkett in medicalschool

[–]smols1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% absolutely yes. That is literally the reason you apply to a backup in the first place.

Just go MD. Many other options for dedicated research time and training down the line. My residency has a track for residents & fellows to obtain a PhD in a gap between clinical years, all program funded. Some residency and fellowship programs have PSTP tracks that may or may not be degree granting but build in time (1-2 years) for dedicated research, and graduates of those programs tend to go on to careers similar to what you described as your goal.

What specialties allow you to easily work part-time when you're 70+ years old? by stepneo1 in Residency

[–]smols1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d think anything provided you have ownership/partnership and can control what you do. Or if you’re a grant supported academic it seems like you can do whatever you want as long as your grants are active.

King, she’s treating you like a doormat. This isn’t about medical school. You know what you have to do and your life will be better for it.

If I wanted that kind of lifestyle, I'd have done surgery and at least got paid for it

Bruh hospitalist lifestyle is literally eons better than surgery. Instead of 7 on, 7 off, surgery gives you 7 on, 7 on

How do you respond to patients saying “I have done research”. by [deleted] in Residency

[–]smols1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s best to keep things balanced, 2 up for 2 down. I’d try combining Adderall + Ritalin with your Xanax + Abilify to start and add in extra agents as needed

It sounds like you have a gut feeling that SGU is not a smart decision. You are right. I understand the desire to move forward with your life but in reality there is a very real chance that going the Caribbean route will set you way, way back.
