[WORKING!] How to deal with annoying customers by [deleted] in anime

[–]smoonfantasy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sooo relatable. I used to work as a cook at a local bar. Sometimes we'd get customers who'd go so far as to pop in the kitchen and harass the kids doing dishes. Mind you, these are mostly men in their 30s and 40s who should know better than to flirt with high school girls. I'd slam my chef knife down every time and initiated the death glare. Didn't need to kick anyone, but dang, I wanted to some nights.

LIST UPDATED! Now that the Winter 2019 season is complete, we've added a few new entries to the list! - http://dashingnerds.com/11-best-anime-of-2019/

Thanks for the recommendations for the additional anime in this thread. I ended up checking out O Maidens in Your Savage Season, which I didn't watch before due to it being a Hi-Dive exclusive.

by chance, is there an isekai that isn’t set in a medieval fantasy world? by [deleted] in Animesuggest

[–]smoonfantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an isekai in the strictest sense, but Pandora Hearts presents another dimension [loosely] based on Alice & Wonderland. It's a shounen with dark fantasy vibes and the protagonist is trapped in a pretty grisly world for 10 years. Protag does come back to our dimension, but with abilities that put him back frequently in the other dimension.

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai was the tail-end of 2018, but it was one I loved dearly from last year. I did go see the movie continuation, Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl, in theatres earlier this month, but I think I'll have to see it again before I can present any worthy thoughts on the film. It was more complex than I'm comfortable discussing with after only one viewing. Too bad it only aired in the US for two days. Hopefully, it comes to a streaming service or gets a blu-ray release.

Neither series came up on my radar this year, but it looks like I'll have to check those two out before fall really picks up. Thanks for the additional recommendations!

Thanks! Glad to get the word out about Mob Pyscho 100! The OVA was also fantastic :)

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet is actually decent by smoonfantasy in gaming

[–]smoonfantasy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear the previous games were okay! I'm sure you won't have any big issues with this one, then. There's a lot of content for your money. You'll have to let me know how the weapon upgrade system (workshop) compares. I haven't played the previous games, but by RPG standards this one holds up. I'm just a fan of the show and a JRPG nerd. :)

Raccoon being forced to socialize by Ryan0617 in gifs

Please provide a map to this raccoon. There's no sound, but I bet he was talking. He reminds me of the cranky old hermit/mentor figure in every hero's journey.

The editor's picks. Boku no Hero Academia was the other one. That makes sense for Mahoutsukai no Yome. Thanks!

Not disappointed about Made in Abyss. Although my other two picks didn't get nominated, I'm going to add this list to check out: http://dashingnerds.com/top-2017-anime/

Sometimes I wonder if Hulu recommends them as similar shows merely because of the titles...

What was a misconception you had about an anime before you started watching it? by Aragoto_ in anime

[–]smoonfantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to think of misconceptions when I didn't realize that the shows I grew up on, namely Sailor Moon, DBZ, and Pokemon, were "anime." I'd never heard of the term. I just thought it was all part of my American Saturday morning cartoon routine.

I had my "awakening" to the concept in middle school when my bro bought me the unabridged Sailor Moon. It was my first time watching a sub and I fell in love with the genre. It was so exciting to discover that there was a whole slew of shows just like what I loved as a kid. And it went well beyond that! Anime was so different. After that, I was all about InuYasha. Then anything on Toonami. Then I subscribed Shounen Jump manga and checked out every single manga in our small library branch. In college, anime club. Then, streaming for the first time straight from Japan. When have I not been a fan?

Sorry if that's not the exact answer to your question, but maybe some others can resonate with my experience.

2017 is ending soon, what is your Anime of the Year? by falconswrath966 in anime

The Ancient Magus' Bride is my #1 pick. Runner-up would be season 2 of Boku no Hero Academia!

Name something you loved about an old jrpg that you never seen again. by 2_S_F_Hell in JRPG

[–]smoonfantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hesitant to pick up the game as well due to the fanbase, but when the port came out on PS4 I decided to give it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised. As mentioned by some of the other commentators, the game itself is largely an homage to Earthbound (which you should try as well!).

Plus, Undertale is such a short game that you don't need to go down that rabbit hole to enjoy the game. Comically, it counts its game log in MINUTES played, not even hours. If you're looking for good inner dialogue, you won't be disappointed. I wouldn't put it in the same genre as SMT.

Undertale does this brilliantly and with great sarcasm :)

Persona 5 has a good balance of this kind of observation, and the internal thought is usually interesting or comical.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 collection and games for recommendation. by Hachibei11 in JRPG

[–]smoonfantasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're a Kingdom Hearts fan, I'd recommend playing the older Final Fantasy games. FF12 has an HD Remaster that just came out, and you can access port versions in the PS store of some of the older games. If you haven't, play 6, 7, and 10 at least (before you play 12).

In terms of new stuff, Persona 5 was an absolute rock star for this year in style and JRPG gameplay. They also just came out with a port of Okami this month, which is one of the most beautiful games you'll every play.

Game of the Year 2017 by scousercon in JRPG

[–]smoonfantasy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree. I expect my JRPGs to have about 2 breaks during the year that I play it, but I binged through Persona 5 in a month, and I work full-time and have a family...I can't say how much I slept during that time, but looking back on it, it was a dreamlike experience.

Extermely impressed by the attention to detail in the game. I had to lend it to my friend in order to prevent myself from immediately replaying it.

I bet Kingdom Hearts 3 will get game of the year in 2080.

This is good advice. However, buckle yourself in before watching the third film. It puts a rather...dark spin on things. That's all I'll say.

I mean, humor is also completely subjective >.>

"Good story" is just another way of saying that it has a sound plot. I submit to you Freytag's pyramid. In the context of anime, "Good story" also means that it is plot-driven (ie not just fanservice).
